Heading from Scotland to Cornwall for 2 weeks in middle of July. This is our first major camping trip...don't want to take too much stuff or to leave out essentials...advice for me and kids (4 abd 6) please?
we always pack for 5 or 6 days of various weather (layers) and do laundry a couple of times during our summer holiday, it takes up much less room. For me I normally take one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, a few t shirts, fleece, a couple of summer dresses with a cardigan and leggings with a jumper. You'll find the weather varies from day to day and if you can bear having cool legs for a couple of days this combination should cover it.
With kids in tow we don't feel the need to dress in all the walking gear. Most amusing when in the lake district dressed casual and come across walkers with huge back packs all strung together whilst on one of our little walks.
last year i packed bare essentials, something warm! waterproofs, 2x shorts and 2x trousers etc, basically i packed for 4 days each with additional layers for cold weather and planned to do at least one wash........However, once at cornwall, we bought wetsuits and spent the entire time at the beach bodyboarding!! (i said id never wear one and changed my mind half hour later lol) xx

Perran sands august 2 weeks
Hopefully a few more this year!
I also go with the layering theme. Stuff for very hot weather and then extra layers for more inclement weather, plus chilly mornings and evenings.
Also I take washing liquid and conditioner and do a bit of hand washing in the laundry if the kids have dirtied more clothes than expected.
Swimming costumes thick jumpers raincoats shorts long trousers and suncream. Walking shoes and flipflops. That should cover it. Oh and wellington boots for the floods.
As a rule July is warmer than January but no one knows at this stage.
versatile shoes and layers (so on a typical day the kids will wear tshirt and shorts, with a light jumper, followed by a thick fleecy jumper and added vest in the evening. Its just about layering really :)

My daughter (who is 8) and I tend to go for leggings and shorts which can be worn separately or together. I appreciate it makes me look 34 going on 14 but it's functional. Then similar with tops; vest tops, t-shirts and thin fleeces which can be worn separately or together depending on the temperature. My son has a selection of three quarter length trousers he wears a lot. These are much easier if they weather is wet or long grass is dewy as they don't get dirty. My hubby lives in shorts. One pair of jeans each is sufficient then. We pack for 4/5 days and do a wash load on day 4, then wear it all again, in fact depending on how much time you spend in swimming kit, sometimes you can make that much kit last the whole 7 days.
Similar to us...we are going travelling from Scotland to Cornwall in July but on this occasion we are not camping unfortunately...staying in a cottage for a week then heading to Avon & Kennet canal for a week on a canal boat. All new experiences but will miss our camping. Layers layers layers is the way to go (& do a wash midway).
I've been trying to convince my husband that driving from Scotland to Cornwall isn't a crazy idea so delighted to see I'm not the only one!
This will be our first long trip with the kids and I am fully expecting to spend a lot of time doing laundry no matter how many clothes we pack!
Layers, simple as that, long sleeved tops to go under a jumper or fleece if it is cold, waterproof jacket/coat if it is cold and/or raining, the fleece will double up as an additional layer when the sun (if any - here's hoping!) goes down, T shirts, shorts, jeans, swimming gear/wetsuits and something to wear at night, leggings and tshirt or long sleeve top can work just as well as pjs.
When we went away with all the kids we used to do a laundrette wash every 5 -6 days to keep on top of it, so enough to last for that long will be fine, and no, you don't need clean things every day, just clean undies!
Interesting that you are going from Scotland to Cornwall, we are heading from Bedford to Cornwall on the 1st or 2nd July for about a week or perhaps a little bit longer (depending on the weather and how we all feel) then off up to the Highlands with a night's stopover or two on the way for the rest of July.
Have a great time!
