On our new tents second outing (Outwell inflateable) a field mouse has chewed a hole in the groundsheet. At first I thought one of the chair legs had gone through until we lifted the groundsheet and there was the little ****** complete with the dried grass nest it was building. I'm not sure who was the most surprised, it or me!
How unlucky, after years of camping in an old secondhand tent with no incidents. On the plus side, it isn't the SIG but the extra groundsheet you get for the extension part. Are groundsheets getting thinner? It looks so insubstantial I'm amazed it will survive without pucturing.
So, has anyone any ideas how I best repair a hole about the size of a one pence? I have spare ground sheet material from the old tent, tenacious tape and an Outwell field repair kit but I'm really unsure how to start to make it a) waterproof and b) as unnoticeable as possible.
The SiG of my tent was eaten by a mouse too. A hole about the size of a large mobile phone. I cut some tarp into 2 patches the right size and used Gorilla tape to attach one to each side of the hole and also taped completely over both patches. It's very noticeable but has remained leak free even in some seriously heavy rain.
Gorilla tape is a very heavy duty 'stick to anything for all eternity' type affair. Bought mine off Amazon. They do clear or black if i remember rightly. It certainly does the job though.
Gorilla tape also comes in white (for reference only... doubt you'll want it in white!) Not seen it in clear myself.
For a hole the size of a coin, there's no need for patches of anything. The Gorilla tape will do the job perfectly on it's own, stuck directly over the hole. Round off all corners (or cut into a circle/oval). Do both sides of the hole.
Maybe consider Gorilla underneath, and Tenacious tape on top (also rounded off), as I have successfully done, but I'm sure the Gorilla tape will be fine on top too. Maybe decide which looks better on top, as they'll both work. Mine was on a SIG, so hidden by a carpet. (6" slash - neither tape has ever come off, and it's never leaked!)
Ooh... Gorilla Tape may seem expensive, but it really is good stuff. I've folded and taped a few footprints with it (to reduce the size), so always getting wet etc, and I haven't had any peel back/off to date, and some of them were done 3 years ago now!
Ooh... again... when you've used that 0.005% of the roll of tape, shove the remainder in a sealable sandwich bag/similar, and leave it in the spares bag/box, or in with the pegs/mallet etc, so you always have it to hand when away. I hear it's also good for taping up exploded air beam sleeves, amongst many other uses!!
Gorilla tape is also available off the shelf in half-decent DIY warehouses and tool shops... not sure how price compares with the likes of Amazon etc.
Wilcos also stock a range of gorrila tape/glue etc if you have one nearby, found it was cheaper than Amazon too when I got mine a couple of months ago.
We had a mouse chew a hole about the side of a saucer in our awning groundsheet. Had a carpet on top so didn't notice till we packed up!!
