We have a 6 person tent, with the 3 sleeping pods arranged as follows:
1 for my son with a large bed and an enlarged double space for the grown-ups which also contains a couple of clothing units for changing.
I love the space and appreciate it even more so when the weather is grim, which is too often.
I went for the studland 8 today and there are 4 of us. We need the space when it's wet we can sit inside with space and have a good view of the wind and rain :) you'll be glad of the space.
We have the Kampa Croyde 6 and there are three of us (mum, dad and 10 year old).
We like having the space and it is the perfect size for us!

Having just bought a Vango Padstow 500 I have been feeling a bit indulgent, having such a big tent just for me and the dog! It didn't seem so big when viewed in the tent display at the shop, I suppose because most of the other tents on display were huge; they dwarfed the Padstow. Once I'd test-driven the Padstow in the garden it did seem like a bit of overkill! But, as so many of you have already commented, it's nice to have plenty of space in which to move around. Anyway...5 people in this tent??? You'd have to know each other fairly well I would think.
------------- Life without dogs? I don't think so!
We did have a 6 berth tent for 2 of us, it was a vis a vi tent so we had one pod for a bedroom and the other for storing food/clothes etc. The middle bit was for sitting in and cooking. Was great for a 2 week stay. We have now just bought a 5 berth tent but the sleeping pod is all in one and a big living area with a canopy on front. We have a dog so needed a bigger sleeping area as our Jess won't sleep alone and we don't fancy her chewing bits of tent whilst we are asleep. We did have a 3 berth tent at one point but was far to small haha.
We've just bought our 1st tent a 6 birth but we are a family of 2 adults with 4 kids 2,6,8,9. We had it for such a good deal with £500 off the price we couldn't not get it ;)
2 bedrooms that fit our 2 queen air beds, large living room, porch and it also has a rain entrance with its own sewn in ground sheet so we will use this a little on suite for the night.
Tbh I feel did feel embarrassed if people would see us put this humungus 32x13ft tent and think it's to big. I'm so glad that people on here have big tents also and that it's the norm!
What I have noticed when looking at campsites this week is on some we will struggle with size of pitches, we're looking at joining a local D.A and some of their pitch descriptions we actually won't be allowed to put our porch up because the tent on its own only just about fits there max guidelines?
Then I've also noticed campsites saying that if u have a larger birth tent and say for example only 2-4 people camp in it, in high season they will charge for however many people the tent sleeps. Which seems bit far fetched as sounds a lot like bedroom tax lol.
Seems fair enough to me. There's a site we go to in Innerleithen charge based on size of tent & we're happy to pay on that basis & use both tiny & large tent depending on if it's me & the lad or all of us. Bigger tents equals less tents on the site.
On a tiny site at the Wasdale Head Inn in the Lakes a few weeks back there was a huge 6/8 person tunnel of the type popular nowadays. It took up the space of 3 small 2 person tents like you'd normally see on such a site. Sure there was only one fella in it. Never saw anyone else. With the space between tents they request that's a lot of real estate taken up on very small field for one £5 fee. They charge per person so not so bad if tent full.
When we were 5 plus 2 greyhounds, we had a 12 man tent! Now we are 2 and a smaller dog, we have a 5 man. If we have one of the girls with us we use the 6 man tent.
We're just looking at something for 8 man - you do need a lot of room and when it comes down to it,it's just the matter of getting your stuff in and being able to move around comfortably!
As you probably know, when it says e.g. 4 man it really means 4 squashed people - enough room to sleep but not much else.

We have the Kalahari 10 berth (+ porch) for us and two kids, a Sunncamp Breton 500 Deluxe for when it's just us or me and one kid and a Halfords 4 berth for when it's just me escaping the world.
If you've got enough space in the car (or on the motorbike) then go big, hate being cramped when camping (especially when our weather does the usual).
------------- If something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds I'll assume I'm not allowed to post it!!
Our new 6 man polycotton tent arrived last week, it was delivered to the woman across the road. When I went over to pick it up I couldn't lift the box, it was huge. I took the tent bag out the box and hobbled over the street with it, pretending it was no bother because I'm so macho, truth is, I was close to fainting when I reached our house, pulled a few muscles in the process. My boys are 2 and 3, be tough going when we hit the lochs with that, I'm dreading any extra dampness weight. . Anything bigger I couldn't lift out the car

We have an 8 berth just for two of us and the dog. I want to be able to enjoy the holiday even if it rains, so a large living space is really important, and then we can get the board games out :)
We are a family of 5, just getting back into camping again. Our last tent was an Khyam Quebec 8+ effectively a ten man tent. We had the kids in the three pods up one end ( 2 doubles, one single). Up our end of the tent we had two pods a three man pod for us as we looked after all luggage, and a two man pod for the Kampa loo and a place to wash your hands & get dressed.
We are planning to down size to a six man now the kids are older.
