Well we had a great few days away at southerness very relaxing. Scenery along the solway coast is beautiful especially at sunset. Took a walk along the beach to the old light house and no rain which is always good. Also glad to say that the Relum super 7 is all ide hoped it would be. Plenty of space outside bedroom pods.Hope to get away again in a couple of weeks.
We stayed at the parkdean park which was £18 pr night inc electric hook up. That includes swimming pool and entertainment passes. Cooking your own food at your tent is the key to keeping it cheap but there is a restraunt on the site and a shop but best taking stuff in with you if you can because like all camp shops they can be a tad expensive and a supermarket is about 14 miles away, worth making the trip to if you are there for a week but not worth going out just for the supermarket if you are going for a few days as any savings from not going to site shop would be eaten up by the fuel you use on a round trip to a supermarket. Entertinment we could take it or leave it, only went when there was something of interest and because it was included. Bar prices can be inflated. The main reason for going to a camp like parkdean was for swimming for the kids. Even if you didnt want to make use of facilities still would be a relaxing break as the camp area is quite nice and the walk along the beach is rejuvinating.
There is another site next door lighthouse leisure not sure if thet take tents though.
I had a look at the sites in the area after I replied to your post, and found a lovely one a few miles down the road from Southerness, Castle Point campsite:
To be honest, the Parkdean style of site isn't really our cup of tea, we prefer a bit more of an 'away from it all' vibe, but sounds like you and your kids had loads to do and enjoyed yourselves and all at £18 a night, sounds a good price!
Yes, I do agree that it is better to cook at the tent, we always either have a full coolbox in the back of the car, or stop somewhere on the way to wherever we're going, and as that usually ends up being as close to the back of beyond as we can get, we're always well stocked for cooking a decent meal!
I really like the look of that stretch of coastline, we may well head up that way later on in the summer as we are off to the Highlands again (our favourite place on this earth!) as soon as we can get a break in work
This will be our first summer with our new folding camper, we want to put it to the test and enjoy ourselves!

I know what you mean by wanting to stay away from the more vibrant camps, it's trying to find a balance of relaxing and also keeping the kids in mind as well. Would like to find a relaxing camp but that has a swimming pool. Entertainment isn't a necessity for us but the kids love the swimming.
The site you are looking at, at dalbeatie looks beautiful. Need to try that one as well. Nothing like getting away from it all up the back of beyond and something we do want the kids to experience and learn to sometimes make their own amusement. Post last edited on 22/06/2016 20:18:05
I think it is important to let the kids experience all the options, it is a bit different for us as our 5 kids are now grown up, but that said, they experienced both the 'all singing, all dancing' sites and those that were more basic, guess which one they preferred? Yes, the basic site won through, and the imagination they loved to express was far more fun than a set out format for them, the fun they had making dens and running wild for them was far more fun.
We had the best of both worlds, both the swimming pool complex and also wild swimming, and using their imagination to construct their very own 'world' away from any set out formula designed to entertain young kids... I completely agree that making their own amusement is something that all kids should experience.
