TraceyD, I think you've just summed up camping... do whatever makes you comfortable and enjoyable, dependent on your inclination and space to store and transport.

We all have our visions of what's right for us, and what's too much/de trop/extra hassle factor etc. We take more for a long stay in France, and much less for a weekend in the UK....Oh, and according to the weather one may be anticipating

We use bottles of water overnight - saves the risk of spillage - but do have a little step-stool for a lamp when we have space. Toiletries stay in the toilet bag. I hate messiness also but not willing to take more than what I see as necessary. And we all have different perspectives of necessary!!!

OP -just don't use black plastic sacks for things you want to keep - way too risky.

Although we have a folding camper rather than a tent I pack a plastic drawer unit with our clothes at home and put it in the car boot (we do have an estate car.) once on site it can be taken out and placed in the awning. i found it easier than taking a collapsible camping cupboard and saves time once on site.

I agree and having just invested in a weekend tent we will take much less. My point was though that some people seem to think camping has to be minimalist and roughing it or you're not a proper camper. It should be what makes a happy and comfortable holiday for you even if that is vastly different to your neighbour!

Same here. We've reached the stage where we try to avoid carrying something which needs putting together, just to put the contents of some bags into it. Now, we just take the bags/holdalls (one each). Still manage to take too many clothes, though!

We use individual vacuum packs out of the pound shop..

You don't actually need a vacuum for them though, you just pack them up, roll the air out and zip them up and I put them on the bottom of the boot and pack everything on top..

I've used large freezer bags before in the same way but I find the vacuum bags more durable and then when we get to the campsite, I either let the air out and store them under our pillows (using them as an extra pillow) or take out our clothes for the next day (put them in our sleeping bags so they're warm for the next day) and store the rest of the clothes in the boot of the car.. :)

I use these bags when packing suitcases for other holidays and trips too, such a space saver!

If I am just going for a couple of nights then I pack my clothes in a suit carrier, can get a couple of changes of clothes in it and keeps them flat.

If more than a couple of days then pack a suitcase and hang them in the wardrobe (folding camping one) that also has shelves down one side of it... this is then kept in the spare bedroom in the tent.
