Mad enough to think about camping during Winter at the weekends, I'm good for equipment to take, but i fancy going straight from work after a Friday. Is it daft to arrive at a campsite when its dark? It'll be a campsite i've been to a few times before and my tent is a doddle to set up. Or should I just leave it to Saturday and just go for one night?
Go for it I say. Can only do what spare time allows. And if your tent is easy to put up, all the more reason to go. Who cares if it's dark eh? :) Have an awesome time!
------------- Don't follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
the other way of looking at it would be on arrival your car will be all nice and warm, and if you don't go leaving the doors open and leave your sleeping bag in the car by the heating it will be nice for getting into bed with
Eve in spring it can be dark when you arrive. Use you car lights to aid quick pitching. Keep clothes and sleeping bag in warm car until last moment as Marg6 suggests and enjoy your longer weekend camps
Go for it, it extends the camping season. I tend to do more in low than peak season, since my son no longer camps with me.
Your scenario happened to me, I went Camping on a whim last minute idea, arrived at dusk, ended up pitching in the dark, with just the headlights on. Clear sky that night, I was able to see the stars in all their glory. Plus I checked the weather for cast, no rain, happy days. Like you, I live on the Wirral, it was a drive over the border into North Wales.

Much better idea, don't want car headlights all over campsite, and engines running.......
Also you'll be working in shadow. Not so with a headtorch.
Ewens idea is far better
