Hello guys and girls, I have recently bought a hilux and want to get out and do some rough camping off the beaten track. I do a fair bit of camping throughout the year for the bsb racing but want to go a pitch near a river or lake or just miles from anyone else. Does anyone have places they go that I can just drive to pitch for the night and move to the next spot?
Thanks for all the replies. Not sure where I fancy just anywhere in the UK that I can pitch up chill for the night and leave the next morning. I'm based in Kent but want to travel round the UK a bit. I was looking to go to dartmoor but I'm thinking it'll be best just to go there and find somewhere myself.
Off roading?
Are you talking forestry tracks or cross country. Most of us who wild camp with tents are walkers. I'm not that keen on vehicles churning up the hillsides.
If you are thinking of Scotland, you need to be aware that, contrary to popular thought, there is no wild camping for motorised vehicles. Read the Scottish Access code.
Most forestry roads in Scotland are now locked. There are a few "forest drives", some of which are free, others with a toll, but camping along them is not generally encouraged and with larch disease an increasing problem is likely that access will become worse.
You can try it on with private estates, as there are still access rights to walkers, but you'd better be aware of the shooting calendar!
If you really want somewhere to yourself, park up sensibly and safely and hoof it! Many do. I miss my wild camping days - infirmity - but that's life.
