Hi all,
I am looking for advice on a good tent for more extreme weather. We had a vango 5 person tent that got destroyed by high wind and rain in Pembrokeshire last year - so I need a good, strong, large replacement (4+ person with compartments). It’s expensive, but I’m looking at Robins prospector right now, any other good recommendations greatly appreciated, especially if you have owned a prospector an£ can comment pros/cons.

Don't know the Prospector personally. We have a Fairbanks which has stood up to properly foul weather. They do an extra large version now which might suit.

Edit: Doesn't look as though you can subdivide it. Sorry.

Dutch pyramid in cotton canvas was what I opted for when my Khyam Freelander tent was destroyed during Hurricane Katia back in 2011.

Have a look at the current pyramid tent offerings at ESVO and DE Waard via their websites.

Camping Travel Store in UK has some of their tents on display in the warmer months.

The Prospector (lovely tent though it is) may be a little "boxy" for high winds.... a tipi style such as the Fairbanks as Seanfdh has said....in your case the Grande version?...would be a better shape or any tipi or bell tent, such as Tentipi's range or Blacks of Greenock Solace?
Or as dk168 suggested a Dutch Pyramid, as long as pitched back to wind?

I did reading around best type of tent, and air beam seemed best. We found a Vango online for a very good price and have brought that. Fingers crossed we get away with it this year 😂😂😂

Robens are an old firm with a well deserved good reputation mainly in mountaineering and extreme weather tents they have gradually moved to some more general tents, the specs for the prospector state it has been tested to withstand 140km winds whether you would want to be inside it during that level of extreme is another mater.

I also have a Dutch storm tent also very good in bad weather and fine for two people but obviously slightly less usable room.

A good quality tent should stand in most conditions but for me canvas always wins warmer in cold and cooler in hot my old Cabanon 6 berth frame tent safely with stood 75 mile an hour winds in st ives the same week Diana died remember that holiday for both those reasons.

I agree completely, just struggling to find one right size and wife was happy with 😂😂

In the end the air beam ones are apparently good in strong wind and rain as no fibreglass to shatter, and not as heavy as steel. We brought a Vango that has been tested, probably not as vigorously as Robens, but did seem to have been tested and passed in strong wind, and for the money very good value, so we decided to go for this.

I personally wanted the prospector, tbh a little on the small side, but I would have been happy. Wife wasn’t quite happy as thought May have been a little much for only the two of us to put up.
