Hi all.
This is my first post and I’m hoping it’s in the right bit.

I have an old ring and pin (technical term 🤷🏻‍♀️) tent. Each time I put it up there’s huge strain on the poles just on one side of the tent. I’ve loosened all the straps, checked for twists & made sure the fly sheet is centred but it’s still very tight trying to get the pins in. I have to bend the poles to their absolute limit and I’m waiting for the snap!
Does anyone have any advice? I’ll be putting it up tomorrow for 2 nights.

I’ll try attach a picture of the wonky tent…

Thanks for looking
Jen

I guess you have taken it all down and loosened off all the straps etc ? What I tend to do is assemble my tent ( not my family tent ) then peg out the two back corners then grab the front, lift it up in the air so it fills with air and the tent then takes better shape. You then go around pegging and guying it out. There is also the possibility that you have a defective tent , I have had one and it also looked wonky the same as yours.

Have you tried pitching it on a slope?

I'm wondering if it can be something as simple as the tent not being centred on the poles before you even begin to secure the poles (there seems to be a lot more bare pole on the left of the photo? hard to tell). I have a similar tent and it doesn't like the tent being lopsided on the poles before erected. Also I'd ensure that the all is well before properly tightening the guy lines or moving anything inside or attaching the bedroom.

Are you pitching it with the door zipped shut? That helps ensure that the tent is the right shape before you start guying.

I agree, the poles look as if they might not be evenly centred.

Are all the poles the same length? And in the right place?

They might have given you a too-long pole.

Where did you buy the tent?

I would zip the door closed and try shifting all the fabric along towards the right (as looking at it in your photo)

Thank you everyone it’s a great help!

I’ll try take more care centring the fabric!
I do have the door closed usually.
Bought from outdoor world years ago.

I’m thinking of upgrading to a larger tent maybe next year so if I can’t solve the problem then hopefully shouldn’t have it for much longer.
I love the tent and learn something new every time I put it up! After years of storage (incorrectly) it’s not got too much life left in it.

Thank you all again it’s much appreciated

Jen :)

I had this problem with a massive tent Royal Andorra. The strap was the wrong length, too short.Get some more strap. Pitch the tent with the door closed. Then i would cut the strap. Now see how it sits. You can always sew in by hand a new piece of strap to the correct length .

Before putting the tent up check that all the poles are the same length.
If the poles are different lengths they may be colour coded to show which goes where, the back end of a tent may be smaller that the front and the porch.
Before putting the rooms in check the width and height of each set of poles.
Close all zip doors before putting the tent up.

Enjoy the liveliness of the syntax.
