I have an old Sunncamp MA5050 with a 10amp breaker and the wiring is 2.5mm
Ive just picked up a newer (used) Sunncamp MA5050 and it has a 16amp breaker and 1.5mm cable
Anybody know if there's any real difference between the older model and newer one other than purely modern thinking saying 1.5mm cable is fine for up to 21amps
Presumably this is the cable you use to connect to the site EHU supply. If so, IEE Regs specify it should be 25 metres long and 2.5mm2 cable. That should ensure it's safe for that distance and the 16A MCB on the site EHU point. That is what determines the current rating.
The rating of the breaker in your camper has no bearing on it.
The length should stop you needing to plug 2 lengths together which is potentially dangerous for animals peeing on it or a child playing with it.
The length also ensures the voltage drop in the cable is within the correct limits.
I suspect the 1.5mm2 cable is probably an after market cheapo item which doesn't meet the applicable standards.
We have always used 2.5mm, 25m, cable as that is the standard supplied with a new caravan/motorhome. On the Continent you often see them using the big reels you get in DIY sheds, and they often don't bother to unreel them! Having said that I think a lot of European units don't use electric for heating/hot water so the demands on the cable will be less. Always go for the proper cable in my non expert view

CAMC does not allow cable connections on its sites. I’ve seen a robust closed plastic box protecting the connection used on some independent sites.
I think some small VW type campervans come supplied with 10 or 15m cable, not 25, maybe because it takes up less room when space is at a premium. This conclusion is based on noticing (at a particular site) that some cables didn’t reach from campervan to hookup & those vans all moved to other pitches that had a closer stanchion.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
