Back in the sixties a camper was killed whilst asleep by a runaway car.
maybe that is in the back of my mind.
When we parked on top of the hill last year i was terrified of skidding out of control. I always parked side on to the hill, just in case. Lots of people didn't and i had nightmares about what would happen, especially when i saw a child sitting in the car while the parents were pitching the tent.
So.. much as i am dreading the setting up and packing up i am really looking forward to a car free week, under the new rules, here.
Cars in the car park, tents in the field, and me with a beer in hand listening to the healthy laughter of my kids playing safely.

We went to Eskdale C&CC site in April and had to park in the carpark. Didnt bother us at all. Infact it was a refreshing change being able to relax knowing our 2 year old was completely safe. Also it helped the warden, as he was trying to keep the field natural, rather than full of mud.

I have mixed feeling on this one, I like the idea of car free, especially now that the kids are a bit older and are playing on site, without my watching their everymove, or taking them to the play area. There is definatly something appealing about not having the idiots who think that he 5mph limits don't apply to them, driving past your tent several times a day.
Yet there are advantages to having the car next to the pitch - chiefly for locking valuables in, especially when going for a shower, or to the site shop. My two are not yet capable of going for a shower on their own, so they come with me. Now if Richard is with us, all well and good, he stays with the tent while I go for a shower with the kids, and then when we get back he goes. Now if I am on my own I would lock things like the cameras in the car. Last thing I want to do it traipse to the car park before I go for a shower, just to lock stuff away. Now we often have to take two cars, and use Richard's car as storage. We often shove things like the camping chairs in the boot out of the way when they aren't in use.
Personally I don't think cars should be allowed onto sites. People have a tendency to drive too fast. Plus we have a 2-year-old - I don't think she could be seen from behind the wheel of a 4x4.
Plus, arty744 hit the nail on the head "Would you rather camp in a car park or the countryside?"
I agree and think that cars should be parked away from the tents and not driven round the sites. What really gets my goat is people who use their cars to get to the shower/toilet block, when its only ever a few minutes to walk
I just got back from Bagnol park in Anglesey on Thursday.
It was our first camping trip, and we were allowed to park next to our tent. I think it's silly that sites don't allow you to. As others have said, some of our things actually stay in the boot of the car for easy storage and easy access!! Can't imagine having to walk 5 miutes to get to stuff we need

i can understand you not wanting to be without your car but the sites that don't allow parking are doing it because it is what the people who stay there want. It's a back to nature thing.

Yeah, suppose that's true!! I still enjoy having the car next to us though to keep items in that would take up too much room in the tent. Each to their own though.
And thanks, I loved the camping!! I can't wait to go again!! and I am a right girly girl..so if I can cope, anyone can lol
we camped there last year and its not like the car is miles away its a minutes walk or even less depending where you are pitched, if you were at a bed and breakfast your car would be on the car park not next to your bed.
we have been asked a few times not to put the car next to the tent to avoid churning up the ground and creating a mud bath for the next camper who is allocated that pitch its common sense.

Yes I can understand if there is no gravel patches for your car to be parked on, BUT there was a gravel patch next to every pitch where we stayed, so they are designed to park your car next to your tent. And actually, if everyone at Bagnol had to leave there car on the car park, there would deffo not have been enough room for more that 8 cars, so where would we have all parked?? The car park is TINY and the site is a large one.

i am not very girly but i wish i had made more effort to get the knots out of my hair. It was very windy were we were. I think i will have to go for a crop before i can be seen without a hat!
actually i hate camping but put up with sleeping in a tent to wake up to a fantastic view. I'll post some pics later so you can see what i mean .... (about the parking, to get back on topic!)
