This is our first post on this site, been browsing for a while and have found it very useful.
We are looking to buy a bigger tent and the one that appeals to us the most is the Khyam Ridgi-Dome Ultimate Classic. The only thing we are unsure about is the Bedroom Height 1.70m (I'm 1.80m). The layout of the Tent - Front and Rear porch (Kitchen Area) is ideal it's just the height that is an issue. To get the required height we would have to go to a Khyam Ridgi-Dome XXL Excelsior, but we would then loose the porches... Decisions Decisions!
Were looking for some advice on which way to go from people with experince of this type of tent. Does anyone know if these are on display anywhere?
Buy it mate.. I'm a metre seventy five tall ( about 5 foot 10 in old money !) We have an '02 XXL and to be honest standing up in the bedroom area isn't really an issue for us, we usually crawl from the wreckage in the mornings but are greatful that we can stand up and walk around the rest of the tent listening to the rain hammering on the roof !! We only use one inner and find the XXL has plenty of room for two people, the Ultimate is a nice 'stately home' for you both to rattle around in !
The good news is it does exactly what it says on the tin, once we'd put ours up a few times we had it down to about 45 minutes from unzipping the bag to the last peg and cracking the first beer. Put Khyam in the search box for Tent Talk and read all the previous threads.
------------- You don't stop doing things because you get old, you get old because you stop doing things !
Barry's right you have decent headroom in the Classic, however if headroom in the bedrooms is a must (and it was for me) then try the Khyam Ridge-dome Frontier Excelsior. All the advantages of the classic with the headroom in the bedrooms and 2 porches, both 1 metre in depth.
I set this up a couple of weeks ago and the porches have plenty room to use as a kitchen, you can also always add on one of the new Kyham Annex porches, which would make a huge tent even bigger!
Stuw, we've been looking at the Frontier Excelsior, I guess the only disadvantage is the weight, but then you are getting a thicker fabric. Do you know if there is a divide between the front porch and the main living space and are there any sky lights / windows in the main dome?
There is no divider between the porch and living area, however it is a very big living area, if you used a porch for cooking you would not be tripping over kids or other equipment. When testing I had a couple of directors chairs, my fold away table and 4 chairs, fridge, kitchen table, cooker and still bags of space. Now if you purchased the extra annex you would have a divider as well.
There are windows, a large window on the front door, with a second window on the other porch. There are no skylights, I only had one window opened when testing out and there was plenty light. I found my old tent a little to light, esp in mid summer too bright at 4 in the morning!
With regards the thicker fabric, I pitched the tent first time on my own, it didn't feel heavy when erecting. However when everything is packed away in bags it's quite heavy, but I don't think I will be carrying it far, well I hope not!
Thanks for all the info it's really helpfull. Where can you buy the extra annex from? I can only see one for the XXL Excelsior latest model (Different Colour) or is there another one specifically for the Frontier?
They say it should fit older models, just double check with Kyham, I was considering getting one until I put the frontier up! Still am tempted. The annex is also available from the Outdoor Megastore and is seen in more detail on the Khyam website.
The Frontier has green colour as part of it as well, so the colour of the porch shouldn't look to out of place. Again only realised that once I had put it up.
