The red and blue rubberised airbeds tend to be a tadge smaller than the flock-top fancy types and are quite tough. If space is an issue, then they are not a bad option (tip - they come with and without pillow areas, we made the mistake of buying 'with' and so when a pillow was added the kids slept with heads almost vertical!)
We put a padded mattress protector on (fitted, so it doesn't slip off or get taffled up), then a fitted sheet, then the sleeping bag.
