We have an EHU because my daughter is fed by a pump which needs plugging in. For us an EHU is essential but we have found it useful for other things such as a cooler and lighting. We cook by gas and do not take any entertainment items that need plugging in.
Do I think it is proper camping? I don't think I care what you call it, it's just good fun however you do it!
I've just bought a powered coolbox and EHU for one reason only - to keep my beer cold. Don't mind using a gas lamp, making toast on the stove etc, but warm ale and wine gives me the heebie-jeebies. Can't wait for not having the hassle of ice-packs, frozen bottles of water etc!
We have EHU and it was great in Febuary for the fan heater and electric light, I would never have gone away that early without it, but our next trip is to a very basic site 2 toilets and a cold tap in the middle of nowhere, in the tent not tt and am really looking forward to it as well, got out solar shower and gas equipment, with the EHU and the gas stuff, it just gives us as many options for camping as we can posibably have, not restricted to only a few months a year we can go whenever we like and for as long as we want, and each trip tends to be different.
Only 9 days to go, and my sons on holiday with school, so where going on our own Yippee!!!!!
I bought an ehu this year - mainly so I can take a fridge, should be handy for charging up camera/phone batterys too, I'm gonna take an electric kettle too cuz it'll save gas. I need to find a light to plug in as well, previously I've used a 12 volt light plugged into the car. THE TV IS DEFFINATELY NOT INVITED ON OUR HOLIDAY
We're going EHU for the first time in a week. Main reason for buying was to dry/air kids sleeping bags if weather is bad/damp. As it is don't know about where you are but it's f*****g freezing for May today (I have got a cold so could be that that's making me feel like just crawling back into a warm bed) anyway I'm going to be using my heater to keep us warm and happy - hopefully, never tried heating a tent before.
As for 'real camping', I do think using electricity is breaking tne rules but hopefully I'll never Be tempted to take the telly. I can't think of anything worse than a campsite full of tellys blaring away - I think I'd just go home or try to move to another site.
We went without last year and managed ok, but we were only away for 3 nights at a time. We struggled a bit getting fresh ice blocks for our coolbox and charging our mobile was a pain (cigarette lighter in our car doesn`t work) so decided to get EHU and an electric coolbox this year.
We are only going to use it for lighting, possibly heating (if necessary), the coolbox and my travel hairdryer (sorry but that`s a necessity for me!), the electric pump for the airbeds as our daughter is fed up of using the foot pump and there is DEFINITELY no TV going with us! Our camping hols are for us to spend quality time together as a family and that means NO TV!
