We are intending to buy a tent for the 1st time ever.. can any 1 recommend a good type..we have nothing.. no tent/sleeping bags/airbeds etc at most will be a family of 4... thanks
My only advise would be to get one bigger than you think you'll need, the extra space will be usefull. When me and OH go camping we take a big 4 man tent that comprises of a big dome that i can just about stand up in and a sleeping compartment coming off of the main dome. There is only the 2 of us but we find the extra space is invaluable, especially if the weather isn't too good.
There are other people who can give you advise about makes etc. Although I only paid about £120 for my big 4 man (in a January sale) you can spend a lot more.
Also, you might get a better response if you post in tent talk forum
Mitchells always have loads up on display, think there is one in Sheffield, failing that Middleton near Wakefield is dead easy to get from the M1. Have a look, google it.

A bit more info, you you don't mind:
Want all four of you sleeping together or in seporate bedrooms (2+2)?
Is this primarly for weekends or weeks away?
Just nice summers or all year around?
How will you be transporting it? (in-car, trailer, roof box)
Any budget in mind?

Please, please don't buy a tent off ebay. there are some really cheap tents on there, stormproof usa, ultrafit, freecamp and some others , which are absolute rubbish. People have bought them thinking they have had a great bargain, and been sooo disappointed when it leaks or collapses in a breeze. You'll get sound advice here, and the site squirty recommended , united british caravans, has some very good buys on special offers on last years models. i would imagine you're after a bargain if this is your first tent, so have a look there, all their tents are well known brands.
I've recently brought a tent off of Ebay and it's brilliant. It was brand new (not even taken out of the box) it was from a reputable seller who had fantastic feedback. It was a Wynnster tent, so I knew it was a great brand (especially as I'd already got a Wynnster tent at the time). There are bargains to be had on Ebay, you just need to be careful and know what tent you are after and check the feedback and you could see if anyone on this board has bought from the seller.
As for recommending a tent for you yorkshiredave - We are a family of 4, myself, my husband, our daughter and son. We have recently bought a new tent as we needed a bigger one and opted for the Wynnster Mercury 9 Excel. We've used it 3 times now and it's fantastic. It has 3 pods (2 that fit 2 people and 1 that is meant for 5) which means the kids have a pod each and we leave the divider up in our pod so that we have two thirds of the pod for sleeping and a third for storage. The living area is a great size and it has a a porch at the front and back. It also has 4 big windows with curtains. I got mine from Ebay and I got it for the great price of £160 including delivery. I've got the 2005 model. If you want a to know the name of the seller then feel free to ask. I know that there are a couple of other people who have also won tents from this Ebay shop.
Withoubt doubt you need to see the tent up first. Once you have decided on the make and model then you can shop around for the best deal going. We are a family of 5 and have an alleged 16 berth tent however can only think they are referring to 16 dwarfs !
When you decide on a tent and begin looking at other stuff, I would highly recommend the Vango Astral sleeping bags (best deal found is £40 for x 2) here
As for airbeds, there can be only one, the Coleman Comfort (comes in double size, where each side can be inflated to differing degrees) and single. Best price at the moment is with an ebay seller (if none listed, might be worth emailing her?), her user name is sue119073.
