How much money would you expect to get off a tent that costs £250 but has been on display outdoors since April?

We just got a tent from Yeomans Outdoors that had been up for 5 weeks and got it for half price, plus new bag and pegs!

I would think that much depends on the particular shop and luck on the day. I don't know how the camping supplies business operates but certain other industries work along this basis:
Let's say I own a musical instrument shop and I am a dealer for xxxxx trumpet manufacturers. If my sales of these particular trumpets are fairly bouyant, the manufacturer will supply me with a "demo" model for much less than I would normally buy them in at. Sometimes these "demo's" would even be free. When that model was to be superceded I could then sell on the demo model for whatever price I choose.
Given the above scenario, if tent manufacturers have similar methods, the discount on an ex-demo tent is probably open to negotiation....or luck

The ticket price on the tent last sunday was £250 but the salesman said it was on special at £230 in stock, I went back today with the kids to see if they approve of it but they'd sold the last one from stock, said I could have the display one for £220 (different salesperson)

I can get the tent new and delivered online for £230, should I haggle for more money off or just go for a new one?

oh yeah you have to haggle! They need to knock off more than a tenner for a tent that's been outdoors for 3 months and had people going in and out of it!

If they wont budge on the price, how about they throw in some equipment for free - only if you need it or want it though.

Go haggle, good luck

Hi Happymummy,

You need to consider that synthetic tents deteriorate.  On average they expect them to last 7-10 years worth of 2-3 week holidays.  Hot weather deteriorates them faster.  That means that the life expectancy of a display model will be considerably diminished.  £10 discount just doesn't sound enough to me.

Good luck!

I'm sure I've read a thread somewhere on here that said a tent is only supposed to last about 3 years due to the UV rays

Haggle most definatly, I have been ringing around today looking for a discount, told one shop I would pay cash and they told me no discount for cash, as they do finance???You tell me!

I asked then if they did a price match and they said yes, where is the sence in that...

The shop will get commission from the finance company.

We bought a Sunncamp APS 3004 two weeks ago that was ex display. I had been looking for a weekend tent for a while and this seemed to fit our bill. I know for a fact that it had been on show ( indoors ) for about three weeks as I  had been to the store on a few occasions on the lookout.

The average price that I worked out for this tent was around £200 but we got it for £125 after a bit of good natured haggling so a discount of £10 in my opinion is a  bit of a joke. If they dont offer any better than that I would walk away and see if it was any cheaper a week later, if somebody else has bought in the meantime  they may have done you a favour

I wouldn't pay more than a third retail value on an ex display thats been on display outside and about 50 to 60% for one from indoors

Saw that Don Valley has their ex-display Cabanon Biscaya on sale; not the latest model with the improved groundsheet and bedroom clips, been outside all year and traipsed in and out of etc etc.

£1209 down to.............

(wait for it.....................)

(Any guesses?)

£1000!

BARGAIN! (Don't think!)

My local tent shop has 50% off its display models (and their regular price is lower than the RRP).
