I'm brand new to camping - got all the gear - no idea.
I've had a night in my new tent once (in the back garden) and am due to go 'live' next week (wish me luck).
Only one question at the moment:
With my tent is a spare pole section - presumably in case another of the pole sections breaks (no flies on me). If a section does break how do I get the the broken section off the bungee cord and replace it with the new section?
(I haven't got a broken pole at the moment but thought it might be useful to know)
You're talking about one of the great 'mysteries' of camping!... I broke a couple of sections, a good few years ago and didn't have a clue how to 're string' the poles. Luckily enough after replacing the sections, we fitted the whole thing together (with cord just dangling inside!), slid it into the tent sleeve and pinned it down and that's how it stayed for the rest of the holiday!...
When I got home, I took the pole to the shop where we bought the tent and five minutes later... Sorted!... I don't know how they did it, so in answer to your question... I haven't got a clue!...
There is a restringing kit you can buy at any camping shop. You can also buy pole sections as they are generic and it pays to have a couple of spares and a fixing kit.
...Maybe I'll take lots of tape with me and hope for the best...
You might be new to camping 'Noggy', but you've got the right idea!... A big roll of 'duct tape'... The campers one piece repair kit!...
Good luck on your first trip, though I don't think you'll need it, anyone who takes a big roll of tape is ready for anything!...
Big roll of duct tape saved my life when a tent pole snapped ( ridge pole at the end) Out came the tape round and round and round it went and then once home it took 4 hurs to get it off lol
Then coleman sent us a complete new ridge pole.....Huh!
Happy camping noggy it will all be fine dont worry just enjoy that holiday
You look inside the metal end of the last section of pole, fish the knot at the end of the shock cord elastic out and untie it, unthread the pole to the broken section, replace the broken section, rethread the pole, retie the knot and that`s that. Easy.....
Except it`s even easier if you have a pole rethreading needle (which looks like a very long wire crochet hook) to rethread the pole and a pair of thin needle pointed tweezers to get hold of the end knot, should it prove stubborn. Get one at your local camping shop. At the same time, buy some more rethreading elastic in case that breaks one day. I can never get the knot untied, btw, so I usually just cut it off. There will be plenty of slack. (Untill you`ve done the same thing ten times over.....)
When we broke ours on our first at atempt putting it up , my Dad had the idea of a long piece of wire , i dont know what he & Hubby done with it because it was at that moment , i had to drop my daughter at shops , & when i got back it was done!! xpecting them to be ranting and raving ! Lol
P.s Why cant i get the hang of this reply thingy ??
I have done the rethreading thing with a long piece of wire. However, I overtensioned the shockcord. The pole shot out and assembled itself with speed of one of James Bond's gadjets. Which sounds better than it is. The shockcord is under so much tension that when folded it has cut through two poles, which now need replacing. Needless to say these will be rethreaded slacker.
