Going on first trip tomorrow and do not know if the butterflys in my stomach are excitement or worry. Have no idea how everything has gone in car as it is only small. 2 adults and 2 kids. A couple of glasses of wine tonight I think to convince myself we are doing the right thing.
Have fun and take some warm clothes for late evening

Hi, The whole point of camping is to have fun. Just take your time and make sure you erect your tent the best you can. If you rush that, there is a good chance that you could have problems on a wet and windy night. It is surprising just how much you take with you that you don't actually use. You will find that in time you will have your kit trimmed down to what you actually use and not what you think you may use. Believe me you have done the right thing by going camping. It is a brilliant way of getting away and at a very cheap price compared to B&B etc. The best thing about camping is the FUN. I started with a tent, then a trailer tent, then a small caravan, then a large 5 berth caravan, then a 38ft static caravan, then back to a trailer tent, then back to a tent! Do you know what is the best out of all of these? The camping with the tent we now have....it is superb!
Have fun!
Just come back today from a week in Cornwall. Somethings I realised that were vitally important (asides the vino and usual) are the baby-wipes for the table, the fingers, the anything that needs wiping. Also, the kitchen roll hanging above our heads in the tent (vitally important) and the earplugs for those very, very, very, v,v,v,v,v,v,v,v, inconsiderate campers that do NOT know when to stop laughing, giggling, when to put the kids to bed (yes, at 11.30 they were still running around)!
Also off on first trip tomorrow after dithering for over a year. Whenever I have whimped out, this site has convinced me I must do it. Going to the Witterings so not too far to travel.
I'll post when I get back and let you know how it went.
Wendy & Fionna, just relax, the fun in camping is learning something new on every trip, no matter how important or trivial.
So you are going to get some things right and some things not so right on your first trips, expect that and things won't be so daunting when something goes pear shaped ,because you didn't get something wrong , you learned something !
Have a wonderful trip, the both of you .
Cheers

I agree with the above posting...you learn something on every trip. Our trip this time was my worst organised but actually I enjoyed just putting up with some of the bare esentials ...it made me ralise that camping can get very complicated which often takes the pleasure out of it.
In other words, don't stress and just chill out about it...even when it goes wrong!
Try not to worry. you will have a wonderful time, the kids will make lots of friends and you can sit back and relax. The worst bit is putting up the tent. We always end up in an arguement during pitching but just grit your teeth smile and say 'yes dear' and be ready with the well deserved wine/beer at the end.
Relax and enjoy it, camping is great! My advice would is to store the camping gear that you use in ready to go plastic storage boxes. Having all the bits and pieces in one place makes things easier to remember and loading the car is alot easier too.
One more thing, the most important thing, Dont forget your corkscrew!!!
Lucky you, we just got back from our 1st camping trip yesterday. I agree with the other postings, you will take loads of bits you wont use and wont have something that you could do with or mmm that would have been handy. We are completely hooked and plan to go away next weekend! The best bit of all is the kids playing - no tv/dvd etc. Have a great time and I bet you come back planning your next trip away!
