Hi, we had a trial run of putting up a Sunn Camp Odessy XL tent last night and there were a few rings, with what looked like half a peg attached to various parts of the bottom of the fly sheet - are the bootom of the pole supposed to go through these?
Also, there are 2 canvas strips that seem to go across the width of the tent on the inside of the tent - how do we stop these from rising upwards?
yes to the poles in pegs and the straps should be taught across the tent and then you will have the correct shape for the area the strap covers ...oh and welcome to ukcs ...............happy trails
The end of the pole fits onto the half peg things (proper name is PINS), then you peg down with a proper peg through the centre of the ring. That should stop the webbing straps that run across the centre from rising.
Were you doing the classic newbie mistake of tucking the poles into the centre of the rings and trying to knock the pins into the ground, perhaps? Common newbie error, but 100% wrong, sorry.
Incidentally, if you have more than one pin on a ring, make sure you fit the poles onto them in the correct sequence ie outside pole to outside pin, cwntre pole to centre pin etc. Otherwise your canvas will get twisted round the poles and you`ll get into a right mess.

we made mistake with our old dome of just putting poles on first pin that came to hand what a pain wrinkles everywhere
when all pins are in correct poles the ring can be pegged down for extra pegging points

Many thanks for your replies - yes we were putting the poles into the rings and then trying to pin down!
Please can you advise the correct sequence in putting the tent up? Should we lay the fly sheet down, then insert the poles into the colour coded hump type thing, then put the poles in the pins and peg down, pole by pole, starting from the back pole and working forwards towarrds the front pole, then peg down the whole tent, after we had pegged down the 3 poles, and then secure the gy ropes, or have I got it all wrong?
For ours, we lay flysheet flat. Put poles through sleeves. Attach poles onto pins then get one of kids to go round and put peg through ring (temporary) whilst me and OH holds tent. Once tent up approx OH unwinds guy ropes whilst a fix ring pegs better. By that stage everything is usually ready for me to go round and peg guys.
Just play around with the sequence thats suites you, your tent and the elements best

Hi Anna, first of all, a warm welcome to UKCS. To answer your question, yes that is a good general tent erecting sequence . On some models (like a tunnel tent such as the odyssey) you may need to use at least some guys earlier on in order to hold the end pole in an upright position, and obviously in windy weather you may need to do more pegging (at least temporarily) in order to stop it all flying away like a huge kite!
I saw on your other thread that you got the tent on ebay - I think it is a good choice (I have had several Sunncamps and been happy with them) so I hope you got it at a bargain price!
Hi Anna and welcome to UKCS. I remember the first time we pitched a Ring and Pin tent we got it all wrong. But beleive me when you get the hang of it, its a lot quicker and easier.
