Have just got back from our first trip, which was a pretty much a success (thank you BBC Weather for providing the sunshine I ordered).
However, I've a question on cooking. Every morning I'd put the stove outside and then bring it back in everynight, which was a right pain when I wanted a quick cuppa first thing in the morning, but would have to set my gear up first.
I noticed that most other campers with porches (like on my SV8) would keep their stove inside the tent.
I've often cooked under my porch particually in bad weather it's not really a problem as long as your carefull & keep any kids wellaway mine are never allowed anywhere near the porch area whilst i'm cooking.
Personaly i dont like having my stove in the tent but i know what you mean about having to set it up for that morning cuppa,
Ive recently invested in a utility tent to house my stove and cooking equipment ,it makes a huge differance because everythings there ready to use when you need it and its a godsend when the weathers not great .ther'e not that expensive either ,i think there s one on the uk campsite shop for around £40
If you run a search on this topic you'll find LOADS of differing opinions on the subject! I can't guarantee you'll come to a decision after reading them though!
we set our kitchen up just outside the porch , surrounded by windbreaks , and then just covered the whole lot in tarpaulins and clipped them down at night, so allwe had to do in the morning was remove the tarp . in the daytime we put the porch awning up over the kitchen area.
have to say tho , have just been out and bought a day tent for next trip , and am hoping to set that up as kitchen , so it all stays dry
If you have a nylon tent cooking indoors is a lot more risky, particularly if the roof height is low - I'd recommend either a utility tent or outdoor cooking. Having seen how the summer sun can degrade a nylon tent over time I'd hate to see what a double burner might do.
Cooking in a high-roof frame tent with cotton canvas is a lot safer, and I do so when we go away, but even then I know from other threads that others are not keen on the idea. Ultimately it is down to what precautions you take and how comfortable you are personally.
We have the kitchen tent set up complete with double burner/gas fridge ,ect ect ,but then inside the living area of the tent we have a table with a suitcase stove and tea making stuff for use late at night /early morning !
Just spent a week camping in a Gelert vario 6, cooked indoors all week using a colman duel fuel cooker on a sun camp table... no problems. Only needed abit of care whilst lighting and never left the cookers side wilst on, A gas unit would be safer I suppose as it doesn't flair up when lighting.
We have a Vango Diablo 900 which has a large porch area. We like to take a pop-up gazebo to cook in and sit under (leaving all the kitchen equipment under it with table and chairs) - however, where we went at the BH w/e - they wouldn't allow gazebos - so, for the first time, we cooked in the porch, which was fine. We do take a travel electric kettle for that nice, quick early morning cuppa!
we use a fishing tent with a zip up front, which is good because to make a cup of tea, you just unzip it. beach shelter tents are also good. our tent cost about a tenner from lidls, but shop around.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
