hi ,i have bought 6 inch portable b/w radio tv from a car boot .the radio works ok but the tv picture/sound is none existant.do i need to buy an external arial or is it just no good? .bought for camping (battery use only). p. s the pullout arial is in good order!!!!!!!! thanks
i suspect as theres nothing when you switch the switch to tv ,either the switch is broken or the tv is
you will get "snow" even if the tv is untuned, absolutely nothing means the high voltage to the tube isnt on .
hopefully it came with the external arial connection other wise you will have to make your own if its the very small hole.
to tell if its the high voltage to the tube not on put the back of your hand a cm or so from the tube then switch the telly on you should feel the hairs on your hand move.
if its one of those little jobies with a tuning know on the side then to use batteries theres a switch on the back and a switch on the front to select tv (but you probably have swiched everything muttering under your breath)
THANKS FOR MESSAGE ,THE TV CAME WITH A MAINS ADAPTOR BUT NO EX ARIAL.TRIED YOUR TEST AND THE HAIRS DONT MOVE! BUT THERE IS NO SWITCHES ON THE TV / ADAPTOR 4 HI VOLTS . THE ADAPTOR SAYS INPUT 230 VAC 50HZ ,OUT PUT 13.5 VDC 1000 MA .IT IS ONE OF THOSE WITH TUNNING ON THE SIDE.
ANY ADVICE ON THE ABOVE( AND HOW TO MAKE AN EXT ARIAL -COAT HANGER MAYBE???? MANY THANKS CHARLIE
if theres no snow or noise in tv mode then i'm afraid its dead ,if the radio works the psu is ok .i will look at our old one to see if theres an onboard fuse for the telly part.
there is a soldered in fuse but whether its just for the tv section i dont know ,if your desperate its only 4 screws to take it apart and have a peek .if the tiny thin wire is broken the fuse is gone and your telly "may" once its replaced live once more ,soldering needed though to replace it with the exact same fuse type .poking a solid bit of wire in the arial hole will probably kill the tuner and you wont get any picture or sound.
to make a airal connector for a ordinary arial connection ,find a MONO connector (exactly the same type of connector as headphones are but with 2 connectors on the "pin" instead of 3)the correct size for that hole .get a video to tv conector (the arial one ) look for the end that is a socket (the one with a center hole rather than a pin) and cut the wire a foot from that end ,cut off an inch of plastic covering off the cut end ,peel back braid ,carefully remove 5mm of the plastic covering the center wire ,solder that exposed wire to the center pin of the "headphone" connector and solder the braid to the outer pin ,very carefully inspect the soldered bits for anything that could short them together on reasembly ,put back together hey presto a real arial connector (its strange they dont have one in the first place)
I bought a battery powered amplified aerial from a truckstop, it ran for over a year on a couple of 'AA' batteries being used 5 nights a week in my lorry.
I think it was about £12.

then the signal probably isnt large enough to recieve using the telescopic arial .make or buy a connector as above! you can then use your house arial to see if it gets programes.you can then fork out for a external arial for the telly.
our one is useless at home but gets a perfect picture in good reception areas ,i bought a cheap argos "house" arial (the smallest one in kit form complete with wire)and made the above connector to couple the arial to the tv ,its works ok on a pole at the side of the tent most places.
