Hi,

New to this site, first post. Been looking through for advice on which tent to purchase. We're not new to camping but haven't done it for a couple of years. We recently bought a Royal Biarittz 6 from Barretts of Feckenham.

Has anyone got any views or experiences with Royal tents?

We took ours to Malven the other weekend, managed to get it pitch quite quickly during a break in the rain, however on sat night/sun morning rained non stop. When standing in the porch felt a fine mist of water hitting me, started looking round and the flysheet was letting water in everywhere, whole of the inner tent was cover in water drops. Not good, also had another issue with the front porch door, whenever opening while it was wet all the water would run off the door and straight into the tent and after weekend the inner porch floor was drenched. Not good when you have 2 labradors.....  Anyway ripped the tent down and stuffed it into the roof box, and drove home. Not best weekend I've had.

Anyway phoned Barretts up when got back and told them about the leaking, the guy asked what tent it was and imediately said just bring it back for a exchange. This made me a bit suspicous. Hence my post...

Has anyone got a royal tent? Any good?

We have now decided to get a different tent, there are a few design issue I have with the Large dome tents with slopping doors also being 6ft2 I wouldn't mind being able to stand in the sleep area.

We are now looking at the Outwell Montana 6 with side and front canopy. What do people think of this one? Also the Vango Vail 700 i think. Can anyone tell me what the fitted groundsheet in these tents is made of? The Royal Biarritz was woven grey material, does anyone know a tent that has a sort of rubber type material for its groundsheet?

Who is the best Nylon tent manufacturer?

Any help would be great...

Cheers

Al

Have you looked at the Wynnster Antares tents, they had the 9 at Barretts at Measham when I was looking for a new tent, there's loads of headroom in them.

Thanks for the welcome.

I've had a look at Wynnster first cos that was my first proper tent I bought and has been excellent over the years but after my experience with a big dome tent I'm not happy with the sloping doors. Thats why I'm thinking of a tunnel style tent.

Think I'm going to go to yeomans in wolverhampton at the weekend, they have the outwell on display.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the site.

I've had a Royal in the past, and after a couple of years and some good storms a couple of poles snapped. It never leaked though.

We now have a couple of Wynnsters, a Brittany 9 (a couple of years old) and a smaller shrike (both from Barretts). The Brittany is a tunnel tent which we prefer for the extra headroom and no wasted space because of sloping sides.

I'd highly recommend the Wynnsters, probably over the Royal which seemed a bit less well made.

Do you think there is much difference between the different manufacturers?

Hi......... did look at Royal tents when we looked at Vango's. They looked ok the reason we decided against it was for us the Royal we looked at against the Vango was a lower HH.

Enjoy your tent .....

hi i bought a royal anndora this year.took it away and first time round it rained in round a couple of the toggles. up there with a can of fabsil ,sorted.second time( though through a fault of my own, decided to clean it and took off all the guys and didnt put them all back on)it hosed it down in snowdonia and when it rains there it RAINS. got back to a flat tent.  but it did not rip or bust any poles!!.however i did buy this tent as a SECOND .every time we pitched it it never sat right.took it to my friends to dry out. and i looked and knew what was wrong.the straps that go from back to front were different lengths!!. so i sliced through them and added some more webbing on.it sits perfect now. i wonder how many more are like this though.there is a royal on e bay at the minute and it seems to lean to the right side

What is the item number for the Royal on eBay?

Ours sat ok but just must have been a faultly one. The guy at Barretts said that they get them now and again. If I'm honest there isn't anything wrong with the tent really, its good value for money, I just think after trying it a few times we have discovered a few annoying things that I hope I can find a different style of tent will cure.
