My bother has just informed me that he has not taken his tent out of the bin liner he stuffed it in (due to being very wet) since September, Surprisingly it is not moldy but it stunk, so he has washed it in the bath and it seems ok!!!!

The only problem is that the metal eyelets has gone rusty and due to the fact that they where laid on the windows have nasty rust marks on the window panels.

Does anyone have any idea of how to remove them?

if he has used bleach, washing powder or washing up liquid he has taken th water proofing out of the fabric. you should only use specialist tent cleaner. you may be able to re proof it again with fabsil

If the windows are clear plastic then stain devil for rust will get the marks off, avoid getting it on the canvas. The tent itself is best put up to see the damage and then reproofed. If he has used detergent and not rinsed it out fully the fabsil/ thompsons may not take so make sure it is really rinsed well. We bought a caravan with an awning in a similar state and miraculously a jump up and down in the bath with lux flakes and good hosing down on the whirly gig sorted it out.

KURUST gel from halfords...wear some rubber gloves and brush some on, agitate with brush after 10 min or so repeat till rust gone. Wipe off with tissue and rinse whole area thoroughly. Stain devils may be ok but may contain "non-ionic surfactants"..(detergent), this may cause you to thoroughly wash and re-proof

Bleach?????? Was it a synthetic tent?????

My honest opinion? If it was synthetic, throw it in the bin and get another one. A combination of long term wet, rust, bleach and possibly detergent will have probably delaminated the fabric in a dozen different ways.

If it`s canvas, get it back in the bath and rinse it another dozen times or so. Then pitch it, peg it out well and let it dry. Go inside and have a good look at the canvas against the light. Thin bits? Splitting threads? No? Lucky you. You can go ahead and reproof it.

Dilute lemon juice is recommended to remove rust marks from fabric, followed by sunlight!  The same book on stains says that chlorine based bleach will FIX the rust mark into the fabric :(
