My electric toilet pump stopped working last time out. I've dismantled and found the fault, it was one of the crimped connections in the flush tank that had corroded.
Anyways, whilst I've got it all apart I'm thinking of just renewing everything including the pump.
Question is, do you think it's worth paying £40 for the named Thetford pump when alternatives can be had for £20 ?
My Thetford pump got 'sticky' after the winter lay up this year and wouldn't run, tweaked the rotor back to life but figured time for a spare pump for when the old one could not be tweaked back to life, it's 7 years old and well used, so not feeling too aggrieved when it fails completely.
Bought a new Comet branded one off ebay for IIRC £16 - it's IDENTICAL to the Thetford pump except for the branding printed on the pump, and made in Germany, so not a rubbish cheap Chinese copy of a genuine Thetford. I'd put money on Thetford buying in these Comet pumps as OEM fitment. It's a bare ended lead, so needs the plug swapping off old pump to plug onto control PCB, but that's no issue for me, just splice the lead and heat shrink sleeve the joint ABOVE the water level.
I wouldn't be inclined to pay the extortionate rip-off price Thetford charge!
There's a strong possibility that you are paying for the name 'Thetford' as they mark up about 20% of the retail price for the privilege of having it stated on the product. It's no different to towbars as people buying new cars from a dealer request having a manufacturer towbar fitted which the dealer buys them from either Brink or Witter then sticks the manufacturers badge on it which costs around 300 quid more. I would be tempted to buy an alternative brand at half the price as it will come with the same 12 month warranty anyway.
Manufacturers rarely make accessories, they just buy in kit from equipment manufactures and have their brand name printed on them. For example, Rolls Royce and Bently car suspension spheres are made by Citroen with their logo on them. They are then put in the appropriatly badged plastic bag and cardboard box and priced at many times the Citroen price.
