All power points work plus two wall lights but all overhead lights not working , just acquired this caravan only to find lots of problems 😡any advice re overhead lights please JonD
The ones that are not working are 12v. The van should have a leisure battery. This is charged by by an an on board power supply when connected to mains.
I had an Abbey many years ago so memory not 100%!
There could be a switch marked car/caravan set this to,caravan or a 12 v master switch which should be on. There may be a voltmeter which will show the state of charge.
There will be a fusebox somewhere with 12v fuses. Most likely a 12v fuse near the feed to the battery.
The battery is located in a side locker accessed from outside.
If you have a multimeter or know someone with one you can check the battery if fitted.
The 12v also supplies the water pump, possibly fridge igniter on gas and maybe cooker gas igniter.
If you don't have a handbook they may be available online as its been a while since Abbey were made.
We had an 89 Abbey GTs 415 from 90 to 99.A great van which was well used.

yes, spot on, some caravans have a transformer so can run without a battery, but most arent like that and its always a good idea regardless, incase of ehu supply problems to have a fully charged battery, you can at least draw water and turn lights on then.

Hi JonD, If your van has a working charger, and you intend to use mains EHU, virtually any 12 volt battery will do as all you will be using it for is to stabilise the output from the charger. However, if you intend to go off-grid at all (no mains supply) I would recommend you get a decent new leisure battery and fit that. First you need to establish that the caravan has a charger and that it is working correctly.
Our 89 Abbey had a leisure battery and on board charger so yours should have.
Once you get a battery switch off any 12v master switch and the mains.
Fit the battery then switch on hopefully all will work.
With mains connected you can switch your fridge to mains too.
The onboard charger should keep the battery charged.
The fridge will have a 12v or battery setting. This only works when the caravan is connected to the car with engine running.( As long as car has correct wiring).
Hope it all works for you.
