Hi all, first time caravan Ower here, we brought a 94 swift challenger 450/SE, very safe caravan for its year but I have two issues, didn't stop us going away last weekend, which we all loved, my first issue is no hot water coming for taps, pump is running the whole time, I have cold water no problem, just the hot water, I checked pipework and no blockage as far as I can see, water is heating under the seat I checked , is there a fuse or pressure switch gone I wonder, or thermostat maybe, other issue is toilet not flushing, it's the Thetford cassette manual toilet,    neither of these are big ones as we still can travel, just trying to sort bits , any info will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum. If as you have found out, the water heater is heating the water, it may be that your tap is the swivel hot to cold mixer type, if so the internal bits of it's cartridge may have been frost damaged and doesn't actually open the hot line. This may account for the pump pressure never being high enough to turn off the pump.

If so it's a pretty simple and relatively cheap fix, open and remove the internal ceramic cartrige and check that it's internal bits move as required to allow both hot and cold water to flow.

Dave.

If you have a Carver Cascade water heater, I would imagine that you have a stuck non-return valve, which is quite a common problem.

Have you opened a hot water tap and let it run for a few minutes to fill the water heater and pipework.

If you're getting spluttering from a tap that is what you need to do.

The non-return valve is quite cheap to replace but often very difficult to get to. It is the pipe connection on the bottom right of the heater, viewed from the inside of the caravan.

You should not put the water heater on until you have purged the air out the system by opening the hot tap when first filling the system

Checking if non return valve is at fault, (which is part of the cold water inlet), is simple.
Switch pump off and remove drain bung out side, tank will start draining if full?, but have someone switch pump on and water should then gush out! If so then nothing wrong with it.

Assuming the cold water inlet fitting is black plastic, (not the older white ones), there is a trick well worth trying that can often free a stuck nvr. First is too again switch pump off and remove drain bung.
Cold water inlet is at the other end of the hole and the tip of the nvr is poking out of the fitting so easily reachable with a long blade pozi screwdriver. Now what you can try is, switch pump back on so waters now trying to push it open while you put the screwdriver tip to the back of the hole and flick the tip rapidly but lightly around in an effort to clip the nvr tip so moving it slightly in different directions and assist the water as it tries to open it. If that works then push the tip so closing valve and perhaps repeat process to see if it becomes free and starts to work correctly opening with water alone.
Note, all very gentle, nothing like force required
