Can someone help we are new at caravan I gone to switch the water pump on to fill the tank up and no power at all coming from pump fuse looks ok can someone help thanks
Hi, and welcome. You need to start at the beginning. First of all do you have power at the battery? Are any of your other 12 volt fittings working, lights for instance? Are you hooked up to 240 volt mains supply?
When a water pump won't activate it could be one of a number of related problems. It could be a low voltage battery, defective pump switch, dirty contacts at the exterior pump connection or the water system isn't not pressurising to name a few examples. You just have to be a bit logical and work through the steps starting with the battery which you will need a voltmeter to test it till you trace the fault.
Basically, it's a bit like asking, "My car won't start, any idea what's wrong with it?"
The red switch is not turning on to start the pump
The tank will not fill up with water it’s dead, lights in the caravan all working , battery fully charged regards
You need to be a bit more specific regarding what red switch is not turning ON. There is only one pump switch inside the caravan with a red light that illuminates when the pump is running if that's what you mean.
How do you know that the battery is fully charged as you need a voltmeter to confirm exactly how much charge is in the battery.
As Tango rightly says, it could be any number of things. It is very difficult to diagnose such a problem from a distance, it is much easier if you are hands-on. I would start checking systematically through the circuit leading to the pump with my multi-meter, starting at the pump itself which could have failed. Next would come the pump switch and the fuse, bearing in mind that you cannot tell for certain that a fuse is ok simply by looking at it. I have known fuses to look fine, but there is no circuit through them. I have also known fuses that are ok, but are not making proper contact in the fuse-holder. You have to test that there is power on both sides of the fuse using a multi-meter. With my own caravan I had one occasion where I had no 12 volt power at all. The main fuse itself was fine, but there was corrosion inside the fuse-holder preventing it making proper contact.
ok easiest way to check the pump is once on site ask another caravanner if you can plug you pump in to their van, that will eliminate a problem, if still no water, did you do the master switch?
what would help most tho is if you gave us the make model and year of your caravan and we can check you have done the correct start up process
Ok thank you I will change the fuses and go step by step it says 10 amp fuse for the pump I was hoping it run s something else then I know if it was the fuse
If the fuse is ok, and there is no corrosion around the fuse-holder preventing proper contact, there is obviously no power getting to the fuse panel. I don't know that particular caravan's layout or control panel so I don't know what else is powered from it. It may be that there is a broken wire or bad connection somewhere, but as I am not familiar with the wiring layout of that caravan, I can't advise further where to check.
I'm afraid all my comments are general ones rather than make or model specific. I don't even know what an Avondale Windsor 2006 model looks like or where anything is in one.
My own caravan is a 1992 Elddis Wisp and it's probably very different in layout. Most caravans have basically the same wiring but things are in very different places. I could probably diagnose and fix most caravan electrical problems, but only if I had the actual caravan right in front of me so that I could go over it with my test meter. Trying to diagnose a specific problem on a specific caravan without having it immediately to hand is virtually impossible, unless you happen to have intimate knowledge of that model.
