Hi

I’m wintering my van down at the moment , next on the list is the toilet cassette. I know there are products out there to use , however my question is can I use a strong Milton solution and fill the cassette the leave overnight , will this do the job.

Hi Andy
For the last 7 years of wintering the van I just rinse out the Thetford cassette with water, drain and put a half capfull of the blue toilet stuff. Never had either an odour issue of failed gaskets. I think (please check) that Milton is a bleach based product and bleach may affect the gaskets, ie cause swelling.

It might depend on how old it is. I have used the Thetford product for cleaning cassettes but I have also use a limescale remover like the one you use to descale kettles. The water you put in needs to be warm to hot for best results. Limescale does build up in cassettes.

I use Milton to sterilise the toilet flush tank as it is an ideal treatment to discard any unwanted black bits that are sometimes found at the beginning of the season but for the waste tank I just treat it with a diluted mix of warm water and disinfectant that contains a pleasant aroma such as Zoflora. That should kill any bacteria inside the tank and leave a fragrant refreshing smell when emptied.

For many years I have been using a product that used to be called Fendox but is now called Fenwicks waste pipe and tank cleaner.

I use it after every trip and also for a deep clean when needed.

At the end of every trip after emptying the cassette and rinsing it with water I dilute 100ml of the product with 900ml of water and use it to wash the toilet bowl and then drain down into the cassette. I then flush out all the remaining water from the flush tank and add a further 100ml of the product into the tank. I give the tank a good shake to make sure all surfaces are covered and leave for 20 minutes before emptying. This seems to keep the cassette really fresh between trips.

About once a year I do a deep clean and for this, I use 500ml of the product and fill the cassette right up and leave for anything from 1 to 24 hours depending of how much time I have.

It works really well for me and we have never had any issues with the cassette.

I've just started using concentrated Bio clothes wash liquid from Aldi or Lidl instead of the blue stuff in my cassette tank and I must say it looks just like new inside.

The pink stuff seems to be causing black bits in my flush system, Thetford used to suffer from it but they changed the formula but mine is another make and so I may use some Puriclean in it.

Thanks for the replies , in relation to the Aldi washing liquid a mate of mine uses fabric softener instead of blue and he swears by it. I just use water in flush tank now with a small bit of Milton the pink stuff causes mildew

I've only ever encountered mildew (black bits) in the flush tank from using Thetford Pink which others have evidence of this too. Since changing to Elsan Pink over the last few years the problem now seems to have been eliminated.

I have been using fabric softener in the top tank for some time now and very pleased with the results. It also gives a more pleasant odour.
Not yet tried using bio washing liquid in the flush tank, but may try that next season. What is the suggested dosage for that?

We tend to use our toilet for wees most of the time so I put 2 x capfulls in and that seems to cope very well. I tend not to wait until its absolutely full and therefore empty it after a couple of days, this also helps with the weight too.

I have seen, - 2 glugs as a measure.

I just give it a rinse out several times with clean water and empty it and that seems fine for the winter, don't see a need for any products!
