The legal limit for the whole of the EU is 1.6mm across 3/4 of the tread width and has been since 1992 when EU directive EU/3472/91 was implemented.

in my experience there is no way a caravan tyre will wear and get to this depth even at 4 or 5 years old. therefore a tyre with the measurement must be older than 4 to 5 years.when i changed on our last van three years ago,he said your nuts to take these off.still changed them for 8 ply maxmiller  tyres. cost three years ago was £90 fitted and balanced, most important the latter.having seen the damage a blown tyre can do to the inside of a caravan £90 is cheap.thats providing you get off the motorway with only a blown tyre.

Bertie,

Yep you're doing the right thing, changing them at 3 mm, better safe than sorry.

The actual legal limit is 1.6mm across 3/4 of the width of the tread area AND visible tread pattern on the remainder!

And yes, you'd be surprised at how many mechanics/technicians & tyre fitters don't know, 1. how to use a torque wrench correctly & 2. don't have a clue at the correct torque setting 3. don't know that you should never use grease on the threads of the wheel studs, ESPECIALLY copper slip on cars with alloy wheels, as copper on aluminium in a salt water environment i.e winter = galvanitic corrosion

Last year we bought a Renault Traffic Roma Home which we are now selling ,having bought a bigger camper. The tread on all 4 tyres was good including the spare. It was M O Td in June this year & passed . Three weeks later we had a blow out fortunatly we were only doing 5 mph . Called the A A & when he inspected the tyres they were all showing cracks through age not wear, & were not safe. So dont just check the tread have a good look at the condition of the of the rubber. It cost me £229 for new tyres but was cheaper than a funeral

Yes, the legal limit for tread depth is greater on the continent...Where do you think all the 'part worn' tyres
being sold over here come from.
--your wrong--our tyre recycling dept collects the scrap tyres from most of the well known tyre company branches in East Anglia, we have a part worn tyre merchant come in & sort out the useable casings before the rest are shredded-apart from being sold here many part worns are exported to third world countries-Dutch companies also buy worn casings from the UK for retreading
