I did exactly as others suggested.I held it under the car exhaust and it alarmed within seconds!

just fitted one from Amazon. Has a pin that you can reinsert when not using it on site and the battery lasts 7 years. Hold it over a bar b q if you want to check it out.

You can hold it near a car exhaust, but you an also buy testing kits.
Similar to what fire alarm engineers use to test alarms in buildings.
