We have a plug in socket checker we bought for use in France last year for reversed polarity.  This gives a sort of diagnostic check and they don't cost a great deal. 

 I have been following this thread with interest as I would like to add an electric element to our truma 3002 gas heater.  There is a single socket there for the water heater and I was thinking of fitting a double instead.  With both these devices being high loading, is this a good idea?  If the loading was too high would it just mead the rcd tripping out?

Our van has 3 MCBs, one for the sockets and heater, one for the water heater and lights, and one for the fridge and charger.   So it looks like water heater and space heater together is maybe not a good idea.  The RCD covers all the circuits and also acts as a main switch.

The RCD is to protect against earth leakage, while the MCBs are the ones that trip if there is an overload.

We bought one of These to check all our sockets when we had a bad earth, worth every penny!

Tracked it down to the cable in the end. Knew there was a reason it was in the garage!

Replaced cable and it worked straight away. I am quite pleased with myself. In 2 days I've added an extra double socket and given it a usable 12v system (It ran only from the grey cable before).
