I will try to get that information Wizard, thanks. I have an added problem that my van is in storage in a dark barn, and my previous efforts in trying to read and comprehend the upside down small print on the tyre wall by torchlight failed dismally. I hope to get the van out into the daylight this weekend and have a good look at the markings. I'll get back to you....thanks.
...I couldn't find a load index number the last time I looked. Certainly wasn't where it was supposed to be, but I'll have a better look over the weekend as I said
Although the tyre info , i always thought , was on both sides of the tyre , it could just be the load index was on both inside walls ( if you get what i mean ). You should be seeing a load index of 78 or 82 on the tyre .
Blimey! That sounds soft...I haven't heard of any caravan with pressures that low but I'll get back to you with any details I can find on the tyres. They are reinforced...I don't know if that makes any difference. It is a light caravan though. I can push it around without much problem and I'm just a squirt!
The previous owner said he thought they should be 'about' 30 psi which is the pressure I towed it home with on the old tyres, and it towed ok as far as I could tell being my first time - nothing scarey happened anyway. Unfortunately I didn't check what tyres were already on there. I was told they needed changing and i just took it into the tyre place and asked them to fit a couple. That's what they put on and initially they inflated them to 36psi. I queried that having been told they should be 30 and so they reduced them to 32 - lol.
I don't know why they put 155's on instead of 145's...perhaps they aren't the original wheels or something. Whatta carry on - lol
Thanks Michael but I have already seen that chart and the problem is that it only seems to refer to 'trailer' tyres. Mine are car tyres (I believe). Also you need to know the load index number and at the present time I can't find one on the tyres. I need to get it out into the daylight and have a proper look. Thirdly, it would seem (now that I have found my caravan specs) that the weights in that chart for 155 tyres are a lot higher than the weight of my caravan.
If it had 145 tyres on as it is supposed to have (apparently) there would be no problem because the specs tell me the pressures for those, but it has 155 tyres. I don't know if that makes much difference to pressures.
To be very honest I'm starting to get peed off with it all. I bought the caravan to replace my tent in the hope it would give me a little more comfort and relaxation for my weekend camping/fishing trips but before I've even sat down in it I'm being scared to death with reports of overweight, underweight, noseweight, van tyre pressures, car tyre pressures, grease or not to grease, stabiliser or no stabiliser, weighbridges, police inspections and fines, points on my licence...it will be lengthy prison terms next!! I'd be better off in a B&B next to a lake.
Bob™57,i call it a learning curve.once you you know which measurements are related to your caravan, you still have to check it all before each trip but you no longer worry about it.still learning after 8 years of caravanning.(spell check does not know the word caravanning)
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Thanks Michael...I will persevere...then I'll go B&B - lol.
I've never established whether there are two n's in caravanning, caravanner etc; but to me, one 'n' doesn't look right. I can't see a reason for two 'n's though so one 'n' could be correct
Wizard...my tyre markings are as follows:-
155R13C 85/83P
Max load single 515kg (1135lbs) at 350KPa (51psi) cold
Max load dual 487kg (1074lbs) at 350KPa (51psi) cold
I've been reading up on Gary's formula in another thread for working out the tyre pressures, and given the information I gave you above it does work out to 32.5psi
However, he also made a comment that reinforced tyres may be different pressures, and mine are reinforced.
He also said something about reducing the maximum load stated on the tyre by 10% for tyres used on caravans. If I do that and work out the formula again the pressures come to 36psi
