we have recently bought a 1994 coachman mirage which is in excellent condition except for the wood is starting to flake on the edge of the cabinets. There is no visible damp on the walls behind it, but it looks as if the wood grain has expanded and cracked along the fluted edging of the of the shelving. has anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this? and how to repair it. if the edges were flat we could get iron on tape but they are bevelled
because all caravans have simulated wood,ie.the wood grain is printed on so as to look like solid wood.if it is not too bad leave it alone because the more you rub you will finish up with a white patch that grows larger and cannot be repaired.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
It's a little difficult to imagine what you are describing. If it's on the front edges of the cabinets it's unlikely to be damp as such but could it be that the fluting itself is actually a stick on wooden edging strip and is peeling off simply with age and years of constant changes of temperature? If it is, then you can buy fluted edging strips from somewhere like Homebase or B&Q and tack them on with panel pins and wood glue.

Thank you for that, Michael. That has actually answered one of my recent problems. I discovered that despite having a good catch, the door on the cupboard above the fridge kept swinging open in transit. I intend to get an extra safety catch put on to prevent this but in the meantime I decided to use sellotape just to hold the door closed while on the move. When I arrived on site I pulled off the tape and it seemed to strip off the top surface leaving a mark I now can't get rid of.
I couldn't understand it since I thought it was a veneer, but your comment now explains it...it's stripped off the surface print! Wish I'd known that before - lol.
