The cheap rubbish ones do work. I've got one.
The main problem is the probes are quite big and bull nosed plus they won't detect damp through the plasticky wall paper.
So either sharpen the probes or use drawing pins to stick through the wall paper (less damage that way) and put the probes across the drawing pins.
If I did it for a living I'd buy a professional one butI don't so I'm quite happy to take a bit longer and save some money.
