What about that stuff they use to coat marks on plastic baths?  I know you can buy it from DIY shops but don't know what it's called.

I'm glad that I didn't just go out and buy the sealant remover.  I tend to be a bit 'bull in a china shop' and wouldn't even have tested it first.

A caravan breaker might be able to supply a replacement shower tray,  if there are any in your area.

I would completely cover your repair ( underneath ) with Sikaflex 512 Caravan mastic Or any good flexable water proof sealant , so there's no chance of water leaking from the shower tray .

Hi Wizard,

Yes, thought of putting something underneath too. Got a tube of 512 left after doing the rooflights so will smear that all over the underside. Have you any idea what I type of paint I could use for the covering of the repair on the good side, preferably in grey, although I'm tempted just to leave it well alone as it wont be used that much.

I've come across this problem in the past. (silicone remover)

In my case , it did look like the bath surface in question was starting to melt.

Like you mention, it looked like the surface had deep scratches.

What was actually happening, was that the silicone was smearing and resetting.(hard)

It looked a right mess and i thought the bath was a goner.

Before ripping the bath out, i decided to add some more "remover".

My logic that if the bath surface had melted, i had nothing to lose.

What i did do this time was only apply the remover to a very small area.

I had kitchen roll, and a wet cloth to hand.

As i applied the remover, i gave it a few seconds and then wiped with kitchen roll.

To my surprise (and relief), the mottled and streaky surface disappeared to be replaced by the shiny original surface.

I then wiped the area with the clean wet cloth to stop the remover causing harm.

It took about an hour, but all the "damage" disappeared.

I resealed the bath, and it been fine ever since.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. Before the tray goes back in I'll give that a try an area at a time, I can see the logic behind it.

The sealant remover is based on delelamine which is a solvent based product which will dissolve sealants including MS polymers, silicones, and polyurethanes.

It will also dissolve PVC and HIPS plastics which many of the plastics in a caravan are made out of.

If you get any on the surface of any plastics, wipe it off immediately and let it dry fully. When fully dry, polish it up with Brasso - yes Brasso.

This also works if you get any sludge (a plastic welder for thompson plastics) on the surface.

a small wet and dry sanding block wiped completely dry and t cut to polish up the surface edges  may do the same job
