Hi all,
Have been reading a lot of posts re: sealing caravans and have at last plucked up the courage to get started on ours (damp at the rear off side - soft wall, but has dried nicely since putting the van under cover for a few months).  I'm not ready to do the internal stuff yet - it's not too bad aesthetically, but want to reseal all of all the rails (these have previously been 'botched' by previous owners unknown, with what looks like anything ranging from silicon sealant to chewing gum!).

The problem is - I've just been out and measured the widths of all the seals - the measured widths include 19mm, 26mm,36mm and 38mm.

Seems that mastic rolls come in 19mm, 32mm and 45mm.

The question is 'do I need to buy a roll of mastic that is wider than the rail, then trim it down? or do I buy the nearest size narrower thanthe rail and patch the shortfall with sikaflex'?

Any advice gratefully received

Cheers

Bort

Hi Bort , Welcome to UKCS , i would go wider, then trim down to the rail size ( the only slight problem with this is that the roll mastic will attract dirt ) .
Or you could use the 32mm roll for the 38mm & 36mm rails , and the 19mm roll for the 26mm & 19mm rails , then where the roll mastic doesn't quite get to the edge you could fill with Sikaflex 512 caravan mastic .

i used a thin width mastic roll and made up the difference with sikaflex, im almost done now to, this job is time consuming so dont thik its as easy as you think, dont forget, it can be quite hard to get the rail inserts back into, good luck though mike

Hi Bort, I have tried a couple of ways, but the way that has left a good finish was smaller mastic and Sikaflex 512 on the edges. See Here. As the Sikaflex once cured does not seem to get discoloured and stays looking good.
