Thanks but one of the above would be one of the big 2 Jim spoke about, and some of the others would be about a 400 - 600 mile round trip from Aberdeen. Take it you haven't travelled much north of the border ?
I can recommend a dealer at Folkeston - is that far for you ?
Moffat? A mere 198.33 mls from Aberdeen and you passed Dumfries 21 miles down the road. Nice part of the country though. Try heading out to the Galloway coast sometime from there - very nice.
Obviously everyone can make up their own minds as to the levels of service that they want, and some people are quite happy and class themselves as experienced enough to do it themselves.
But the point that I was trying to make is that if you go and buy a cheap damp meter and it gives you a high reading, then most people will then not know what to do about it.
Some vans might just have a simple back-seal followed by a re-check within 6 months, other vans might need an awning reseal whislt the worst cases might require a full strip down and reboarding of the affected area(s).
It's one thing to have a full set of tools in your garage, whereas it's another to know how to use them.
I apologise if my reply seemed a bit abrupt. But on a weekly basis we get calls from people that have saved on service costs, only to call us when they think that they have damp and to then get stroppy with us for telling them that they do have damp and informing them of how much it might cost to repair, as if it's our fault !

Alright Dave, points taken. Bad news, like water ingress, is not always well received - ask Fred Goodwin (RBS) but then it was all his fault allegedly!
We can agree to differ on things - I have friends who think I am crazy going off to France in a caravan for 6 weeks on end, but I can afford two such trips every year while they have 10 days at a spa hotel. I know what I'd rather do.
You pays your money etc
No offence taken, I just wanted my say in the debate. That's what most of us are here for and to share experiences and be helpful.

you have upset me now.lol
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Hi Oxter thanks for your kind offer,my son is a motor mechanic so he does my brakes and over run gear ,greasing. and I do the rest, if its somthing I cant handle I
am on good terms with Ian at D** Va***Y as I have bought my last 3 vans there,
I may take up your offer as my son recently became a father and his time is not his own anymore. god I feel Old.

If you have gas and water at home - do you get that serviced every year? If you are worried about gas and can't smell it, check connections with a tub of soapy water and a paint brush. I've never had a leak in umpteen years caravanning.
**gas and water should be serviced every year, that is why tight fisted landlords need proof , do you use a paintbrush and soapy water to do your house . i wouldnt want to live next door, god no,
the gas test just doesnt looks for leaks , other things like damaged flues, ff/fsd faults, things a time served caravaner could become blind to look for
did you know that the last thing you would use to find leaks is soapy water , the gas pipe on a van is copper with brass connections , soap has salt in it , hmm salt and copper/brass not good!!
I bought a damp meter from B & Q and check everything regularly. **Hmm you do it yourself , your choice , but i prefer my proctimeter , most diy testers miss things as i had a customer that found that out last week , a whole side and back of a van shame , but it was a coachman
It's not rocket science - just check everything is working before you set off. **yes It's not rocket science but does your insurence allow you to do it your way ? i know of six underwriters that wont

Getting your caravan serviced by a dealer doesnt necessarily mean its been damp checked. Servicing at some dealers does NOT include a damp proof test. I myself have to pay extra for one to be done.
Robin find a new service technician, if he charges more to do a standard serviceing test get rid.
