the ring / mounting , needs to be able to break when the hand brake is pulled on due to unhitching an two points , when you use u bolt clamps it could stay connected to the towball causing it to bend the mounting point/ break the hitch assembly or allow the van to be draged by the car , .
the way we fit them is to do them in a mini vice ,
the ncc / ntta also recomends you use genuine parts , not oem ones have not been tested , and might either break correctly or cope with the force needed to put the brakes on fully
Ive done them for over 8 yrs & all ive ever used to close the loop is a good pair of mole grips, i set the grips to size then clamp the loop, then release the grips turn 1/2 a turn tighter, then regrip the loop, i do this several times until its fully closed up & can't come off.
The cable will snap once the handbrake is pulled on, theres no way it will keep the caravan attached to the car, i can't count the number of times ive seen snapped cables, some caused when the van comes off the car, but many when the owner has unhitched & forgot to remove it, usually when they are dropping it off for service.
My worry is the new 13 pin sockets, the older 12n & 12s plugs just push in so they come straight out without damage, but the new 13 pin socket fits like a standard light bulb, you push in & turn, then the flip lid also locks onto a peg, I havent yet seen if it gets damaged in that situation.

Had van come off at weekend, breakaway cable didn't snap but straightened out the ring end that's attached to handbrake. Handbrake didn't come on. Also the 13 pin plug pulled out of socket and there was no damage to that. We had just left home, happened round the corner and was doing approx 10 mph
