After the recent heavy rain it is evident that the awning rail is leaking into the van. I have bought some mastic roll and some sikaflex 512. I intended to remove both side awning rails clean both surfaces and seal with the mastic roll and sikaflex.
I asked my local caravan repair guy for advice. He told me not to remove the rails but to run sealant along the sides of the rails. He also said that the sikaflex wasnt a suitable mastic??
What do you think. I would rather do a permanent quality repair than a fix for a few months or so. I also assume that the leak could be from the screws so running sealer down each side would not help??
I have already resealed the horizontal rails with the mastic roll and apart from the odd rusted screw was fine
Cheers Mark

If you want to cure the leak, the only way to do it is to get the rails off, clean it all down and reseal properly.
Wouldn`t want your `local caravan repair guy` anywhere near my van!

just sealing the edges is just a quick fix that might last you a season, i would take the rails off like you said,
when i did mine i put new mastic on then ran a bead of sealent either side just to be sure, its a good idea to replace the screws at the same time.

As long as the old mastic was properly removed and you have got the rail back in place you wont have a problem.
Mastic roll or caraseal stuff doesn`t `cure` or `go-off` so it will be impervious to any rain falling on it as soon as it is secured in place.
