hello everybody thats xmas out of the way, hope all had a nice time . i would like to know with the new ring battery charger the method of leaving it on through winter ive tried just turning it on but they dont recomend permanent rapid charge of which there is 2/4/6/8 to apply ,there is also a recondition switch which would not be used in this case, when turning it on the flash settles on 2 amp but i usually switch this off and the light is static what am i doing wrong thanks
Hi Persian. I dont fully understand your question. Is Ring the make of charger? I have a Halfords own brand one that you select either car or leisure battery, switch on and it charges a flat battery then automatically switches to standby/top up mode. There is also a switch to select sealed or unsealed battery. Have you tried googling the make and model number for operating instructions if you don't have them?
hi sorry for delay, the charger is ring smart charger8 suitable for battery up to100 ah leisure or car. fast charge ,safe charge ,smart charge.it can reconditionas well £49 .it says connect and forget.,i did and battery dropped to 60% iam wondering if anybody is famikiar with this charger and the setting forsafe charge thanks
hi gary on my charger is one switch ,on/off and 3 buttons for recondition .rapid charge and tester for when unit is off. if i switch on the flash light will settle on 2 amp,is this the setting to leave it over winter.i know its not the recondition ,only thre is a warning rapid charge might damage the battery .rather be safe than sorry the price of batteries thanks .ive looked at the 16 volt charger and the unit is exactly the same as the 8 volt as regards switches thanks
Hi, on no account use the fast charge on a leisure battery EVER, my charger has a maintain setting, its a Britool designed to keep a motorbike battery charged, it has a maximum output of only 2 amps.
I think you should be using the recondition program if you are leaving it on all winter, this will take the battery up to fully charged using varying outputs, then when fully charged should maintain it there.
Failing that only use the lowest setting.

I don't know the charger but from what I read of the instructions, the 'might damage' warning is I think dependent on how big a battery your charging?
IE, if it's an 85-110Ahr leisure battery, 8Amps is not what I'd call 'fast' charge, however, if it's a little motorbike battery, say 16Ahr then set to 8A it would attempt to charge that battery in 2hrs which is fast!
I use little 12v 1.2Ahr batteries for testing and have a special charger for them, it's maximum output is just 0.3A and they charge up in about 5-6hrs.
I did once try using a 3.6A charger and it said it had charged them in about 5 minutes! in truth they went flat in 5 minutes as well!! so no good
As you are not in a hurry and simply want to maintain a full charge, I'd first use the recondition setting, and when it's finished and after a few hours, measure the battery terminal voltage, if it's 13.4v-13.8v then it's automatically dropped back to 'maintanance' charge and you can happily leave it connected like that 'maintaining' your batteries charge.
