My TD5 growls/vibrates when the turbo engages, but engine and gearbox seem fine.

Low mileage (57k); air-induction is suspected.

Any suggestions?

TD5s do growl when you turn the power on how growly is it.
5 cylinder engines are not perfectly balanced and vibrate in parts of the rev range.

It's much louder than any normal TD5 the whole time the turbo is engaged. I know it's a Land Rover, not a Rolls Royce, but it sounds like a Sherman tank.

I've had an auto-box specialist check it out: no concerns. My local Land Rover mechanics are happy with the engine itself, but not the noise.

It comes in under load - say towing uphill - but goes off when the road levels, even at the same revs. Any clues?

Have you tried asking on a LR forum, they are more likely to have come across this problem before

sounds like you might of blown off a turbo pipe, do you have lack of power on the hills or not the same amount?, i would check the turbo pipes for any holes, and if fitted the intercooler,
