We have just bought a jockey wheel mover for our Coachman Mirage 440/5. We have just found out that the jockey wheel is in the centre of the A frame at the front and is surrounded by fibreglass/PVC, not at the side as on all of our previous caravans.
We ideally need some form of bracket or adapter so that we can leave the standard jockey wheel in place and attach the mover jockey wheel as and when needed, is there any such item available?
You can easily buy a jockey wheel clamp (most trailer places sell them) the question is where can you attach it to? If I recall the A frame on that model is enclosed so you'd need to cut away some of the fibreglass cover and then it's a question of how you attach the clamp to the A frame.
Usually they bolt through, but yours may not have the holes in place, and drilling them needs to be done such that you don't weaken the A-frame itself.
I'd go to a trailer specialist, rather than a caravan dealer. They'll probably do it a whole lot cheaper.
It's strongly advised NOT to drill the 'A' frame at all as this can affect the integrity of the galvanised chassis and weaken the frame. Having said that though, I'd be surprised if there weren't threaded inserts on the frame already, under the cover.
What type of jockey mover is it anyway, is it the type that temporarily fits in place of the jockey wheel?
The jockey can be removed by dismantling easily enough. Wind wheel down all the way and the two parts will effectively 'un-screw' and allow removal of each part from above and below the 'A' frame. Refit is the reverse.
