Hi all, our van has a scuffed 12n cable where its been dragged along the road at some point, now causing intermittent issues with the indicators.
I've been looking for something off the shelf to join it, but can't see anything, has anyone any ideas apart from buying a junction box and connectors? (which would be easy enough I guess).
Must be a commeon problem but can't find a comon solution!!
Have you been able to determine which inner cables has been affected?
Think I'd suggest getting a male and female connector and re-wire the whole cable, as if you did single inner cables one by one, you can't really garentee that you'll resolve the problem.
Sorry to say this, but it could well be that you might need to go all the way back into the van and replace the cable from its source :(
Mmm, not seen one either to be honest as most 'repairs' I've seen seem to be just crimped/twisted cables bound in insulation tape - not ideal.
Would it be conceivable to do what we did with my in-laws van? His 12N became damaged, but the cable terminated in a junction box about 1m in on the underside of the van, so we bought a length of suitable cable and carefully replaced the whole length between existing junction and connector. In my opinion this is a far better job, it would be worth a glance to see if your cables offer a similar possibility.
What you need is a roll of Amalgamating self sealing tape and a roll of Insulating tape.
Carefully cut away the outer cable (the black stuff) until all the scuffed wiring is exposed.
Wrap insulating tape around each inner scuffed wire until all bared or damaged wire is insulated from each other.
Then bind the whole lot together with the self sealing tape.
This stuff is pulled out until it is nearly twice its length and it then wrapped around whatever, overlapping it by half a strip with each turn. It then tries to retrurn to its original length and in doing so seals itself to itself, forming a watertight bond.
As amalgamating tape cam be used on electrical wiring and hose piping as a sealer, a roll of it is an essential tool in any caravan tool kit. It can even seal a pressurised radiator hose in a car.
