Hi all

Got back from a great week away in Holmsley, New Forest on Saturday. On journey home however, started to have a few electrical woes, and wondering whether it might be something simple before we start spending money!

Basically we were finding that when the brakes were applied when hitched up, the dash lights on the towcar (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe) were flickering, especially the climate control panel strangely. As the journey progressed, I noticed that the side lights on the van dimmed or even went out as the brakes were applied, although the brake lights and indicators were working on the van.

It was a wet journey through some torrential downpours. Van is a 2006 Swift Charisma 590. Car is only 9 months old and towbar only been on 6 months. Could this be just an earthing problem, and if so, where's best to look?

12n plugs etc all look OK, no major corrosion.

Many thanks in anticipation of any suggestions!

Andy

The plugs would be the first thing I would look at to be honest. Driving through that downpour has probably highlighted that there IS water ingress into the plug / socket somewhere. Try thoroughly cleaning both out by spraying WD40 into them and leave for a few mins before drying them out inside carefully with a rag etc. Wipe the exposed pins to remove anything residual. If there is any corrosion present, try and clean it off if you can, as that would cause poor contact issues anyway. Make sure that both the plug and socket both have their rear grommets there to stop water entering the back of them too.

By the age of the items, it would seem more likely to be a problem in the caravan plug rather than your newer car socket, but as with all these things, age is no guarantee of being problem-free..
