from what i was told when i first started 3 years ago vents off in warm weather and on in cold weather . play safe and put them i'm sure someone will tell why . hope it helps
Far as i know when the temperature goes below 10 degrees C you should use winter covers on your fridge vents , this stops the fridge over cooling and freezing all your food / milk etc .
Are they for use with gas or also when 240v is used. I can understand with gas as from what I can remember the temperature of the fridge is not thermostatically controlled but on 240v it is. Does it also apply for all makes of fridge?

... so does this mean if your van is in storeage (i.e. not being used), then I will not need covers? Our van does not have covers (not supplied from new), so just wondering if I need to buy any.
You only really need the covers when using the caravan , but i also use them when my caravan is in storage, as it's stored outside the covers give a bit of extra weather protection .
i take them off when i remember, because they are behind the door as it opens.as wizard says minus 10 it says in my book they should be fitted.i did read a book saying fit them to keep out some of the weather and tree leaf when in storage.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
We leave them on all the time , we are on hook up all the time but dont take them off when moving, this cost us a couple of covers on our last van as when we parked on a public road to go shopping some scroat pinched them the first week we had the van, you would have thought we would have learned and taken them off when parked in say tesco's car park but we forget they are on so are ok when the gas comes on to keep the fridge working when in the car park.
So I would say yes get some , they do save a lot of draughts coming in from the vents but they do allow some as the fridge does need some ventilation.
we used some packing tape over the outside vents last year on our other van as the winds were pretty bad coming in the fridge vents but that really isnt a good idea , but left a bit to vent the fridge.
They are designed to work in a certain temperature range. Siting a freezer in an unheated shed or garage is not the thing to do.
The refridgerant is chosen for its freezing and boiling points at set temperatures and pressures. Outside of the design temperature range they don't work very well at all.
You shouldn't get noticeable draughts getting into the caravan through the fridge vents if the fridge has been installed properly , i had a problem with draughts on my old caravan it was due to a badly fitted baffle plate ( deflector plate ) .

I have had three different motorhomes and every one I have had to cover the vents in winter to stop draughts coming in, I assume that all three of these must have been installed correctly??
I think its just the need to vent them for safety reasons but around every fridge I have had in a van has draughts coming in.
Perhaps its different in a caravan, its years since I owned one and things have come on a bit since then and i didnt notice the draughts coming in around the fridge then to be honest!!
just ordered winter vents for our trip to york at Christmas, i read in the manual of our thetford N112 fridge that they should be fitted at 8 degrees or less !
I read that to protect the metal parts of the fridge, if your van is left over winter in an exposed or salty location then vents can be beneficial in protecting those parts from the adverse effects of driving wind/rain frost etc. So, here on the coast, with the van in storage with no shelter I fit the fridge vent covers over winter.

What fitting the winter vent covers does is reduce the amount of cold air passing over the heat exchanger. Therefore, the purpose is to try and maintain a temperature difference between the heat exchanger and the outside air to transfer the heat energy from inside the fridge to the outside environment.
