Thanks to all of you who pointed out that a bad earth was causing problems with the lights-fixed that .
Spent ages this morning trying to plug the caravan plug into the socket on the car. Took the socket off and replaced it twice still wouldn`t fit . Then I discovered that if I held the plug in my left hand and the cable in my right hand I could turn the cable and the inside of the plug with the pins would rotate. I think this is the problem because the grooves and location thingy do not line up to allow the plug to get a grip in the socket before you twist it.Found that if I messed around and turned the cable I could get everything in a position so that I could connect it. New caravan, so rang service at dealer who said it was normal for the inside of the plug to turn,but I could take it in for them to have a look at(90miles return).
Is it just me or is there a fault?

Sounds as though the fitting of the plug has not been completed fully.On these plugs, after the wires are connected, and the pin section pushed inside the outer case, to lock it all in position, the pin section must be rotated clockwise. When buying a new 13pin plug, it usually comes with a special "cap" (usually Green in colour) for this purpose, but since you probably don't have one of them, the only solution is to hold the plug in one hand, and with a blunt chisel or flat-bladed screwdriver, push clockwise on the lug that is within the pin section, and you will discover it "locks" into place. From memory, it will turn about 45 degrees, and takes quite a bit of force.
Once completed, you'll find that the pins/cable cannot be rotated by hand.
