Hi all - ok - here goes my first ever post!!!!

I am now the proud owner of my first ever van (Adria Olympis - very old but lovely!) after being a tenter for years!

I have a few questions, but at the moment the main one is I noticed a black box on the wall of our van, and it looks like a cigarette lights - so therefore a 12 volt socket I guess - I thought I'd try it and plugged in my in car dvd player, nothing happened so I took out the plug and noticed it was smoking a little!!(Needless to say the dvd car player didnt work when plugged back into the car) - Now I wonder what to do - call it a day and leave it or investigate further and get it working???????

Sounds like the wiring has fused.. Eg a short somewhere.. I would replace the fitting with a modern 12v socket and replace the wire...Tag the new wire to the end of the old and pull through and connect to elecs where the old wires went too..

It may be that the DVD player was the culprit , it may have been a positive earth unit as some cars were/are . Replace the fuse to the socket and try something in it that is definitely negative earth . Better still , if you know someone with a polarity tester , get them to check it for you , far less likely to cause a short that way .
