Not a dirty film!

I have a 1987 CI Cosmos, we only picked it up in May and now we have done a few trips I need some advice.

When you slow for a junction or roundabout, I understand the nose shifts back as the caravan "catches up" and applies the brakes. However, I'm sure you should not get a jolt and bang as the coupling is extended when you get back on the gas. Right? So, is my energy store knackered? It is a Knott coupling, and I may need to adjust it but the hitch head seems quite easy to shove back by hand (I'm not a 20 stone rugby player) as I can easily push it in by heaving on it.

Help!

You have a hydraulic damper on your coupling which prevents this happening.  It sounds as though yours is us and needs replacing.  A simple job.

As above. Replace the damper. Its like a shock absorber. Yours isn't damping or absorbing shock.

Exactly what I was thinking. They call it the energy store?

Thank you Google. Which part do I need?

The damper is a tube with a rod that goes in and out, and there is an eye with a rubber bush in  at each end with an attachment bolt through it, its the same on all couplings.  Take it off and take it round the local motor factors. You will get one cheaper from them.

I'm sure the 'energy store' is not the damper, the store is just a spring connection in the brake rod, the damper fits inside the draw bar tube.

I'm in the process of doing just that! The original owners manual tells me how to do it, and I'll be doing it this week.
