push inner collet around the pipe inwards,and pull pipe out.

Just to clarify the above you should push the collet towards the T piece and pull the pipe away all at the same time

Procedure above as described is correct, If the joint is difficult to get at you can buy a (cheap) little tool that holds the collet in while the pipe is pulled out.

We use John Guest fittings at work, they call them speed fits, which they are, but bloody awful to get off after time!. Try an adjustable spanner to fit just over the pipe to push the collet in whilst pulling pipe outwards.
