I have an LED awning light fixed to the side of my 2009 Abbey GTS 416. Some of the LED's appear to have gone (they are flickering). Does anyone know how to replace this? Do we have to replace the whole unit? or can we simply replace the LED strip? We have had a quick look and cannot work out how to take it off.
LEDs don't flicker--they work or they dont. The fault must be with the circuit ie the leds are being switched on and off! Without seeing the unit itself, I can't offer any advice.
------------- there are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
It's unlikely that some of the LED's have failed (although not impossible). You may find that a number of them share a common connection or earth between them and that common feed is at fault.
Will this not be under warranty?
I friend of ours recently bought a an LED light bar to replacve their awning light. immediately after fitting, a couple of the LED's (together and part way along the unit) failed to work. The whole thing appeared to be sealed, so this failure would be permanent. I thought the fitting inferior to the OE, and I would not fit one unless it looked the business; and it would have to be capable of having the LED's replaced.
most (if not all) LED units I have seen for caravans or otherwise cannot have individual LEDs replaced, the theory being they last "forever" so dont need to be. theres only some very top end LED stuff that can have modules of LEDs replaced, then its in groups, and may still need a soldering iron.
in my experience, the main fault to LED lamps is bad soldering, if you can get to the back of the LED unit, I would go over the connections with some solder, that will cure any dry joints.
I also made my awning light LED, I just bought some SMD LED retro fits from ebay, think they were £4 for the pair from hong kong, been in 18months, and still fine (my awning light uses the same lamp as indicators on cars, so easy to retro some into)
